Minnesota Vikings vs. Chicago Bears

The final Monday Night Football betting battle of the ’09 regular season takes us to NFC North country where the Minnesota Vikings (11-3, 8-5-1 ATS) will invade Soldier Field looking to sweep the season series with the Chicago Bears (5-9, 4-10 ATS). The Vikings have already clinched the division title, but still needs wins under their belts to lock down a first round bye.

As for Chicago, what can one say! It’s just been a miserable season.

Management traded a bulk of the franchises future to bring QB Jay Cutler in this past off-season. Has it panned out? Well, if you think being the league leader with INT’s thrown (25) is something to brag about, then yeah, Chicago got the better of the deal.

The Vikings currently sit as 7-point road favorites with the game ‘total’ set at 41 for tonight’s game against the Bears. Both side and total can be wagered upon at Bookmaker Sportsbook right now!

If you rewind three weeks into the season, you’d find a confident 10-1 Vikings club sitting atop the NFC North Standings with their chests inflated. However since, not all is hunky dory within the Vikings camp as Minny is 1-2 both SU and ATS the L/3 weeks after beating Cincinnati at home and getting its doors blown off at Arizona and most recently Carolina. To make matters worse, the Favre/Childress confrontation on the sidelines of Sunday night’s battle in Carolina has many wondering who’s actually running this team. The head coach, or Favre?

Still, the Vikings are one of the most talented teams in the league; on both sides of the ball. QB Brett Favre is the ringleader of the league’s 9th ranked overall offense (368.9 YPG) and 3rd best scoring attack (28.3 PPG). RB Adrian Peterson ranks 4th amongst the NFL’s best rushers with 1633 yards and 15 TDs. Defensively, the Vikings own the 8th overall (310.3 YPG) and scoring (19.2 PPG) stop unit. DE Jared Allen sits only behind Denver’s Elvis Dumervil with 12.5 sacks on the year.

It’s been extremely tough to be a Chicago Bears fan this season as their 5-9 to date record is far from what most expected from HC Lovie Smith’s outfit. That said; NFL bettors that have been crazy enough to back these guys had to have bought all their holiday gifts on credit with the Bears going a pathetic 4-10 against the closing pointspread thus far; that woeful mark includes a streak of seven straight lost against the Vegas number after getting crushed in Baltimore last week.

There isn’t much this team does well. The offense simply can’t get out of its own way, and Cutler’s inability to not throw the ball to players donning the other team’s colors certainly hasn’t helped. The 18.1 PPG the offense has averaged on the year is good for the league’s 23rd ranking; the Bears have tallied 20 or more points just three times in their L/10 games (Cleveland 30, Arizona 21, Philadelphia 20). MLB Brian Urlacher’s Week 1 injury set the stage for what’s been a miserable season for the defense as it’s surrendered 23 PPG on the year (#21) and allowed opponents to gain 330.9 YPG (#16).

Minnesota already dismantled the Bears back in Week 12 by a 36-10 final count as 10.5-point home chalks. The Bears are 0-6 ATS as an underdog in the 3.5 to 9.5-point range the L/2 seasons, 1-7 ATS their L/8 times out as an underdog, and a woeful 0-7 ATS against +.500 teams in ’09. The Vikes are 7-4 ATS as a favorite and 4-3 SU & ATS on the road this season.

With all the talk about the relationship between head coach Brad Childress and QB Brett Favre everyone seems to forget if the Vikings were to lose this game they would slip out of the #2 spot if the Eagles beat the Broncos. They need to focus on the task at hand and put all this petty stuff behind them.
