NFL Week 12 Preview: Patriots vs. Saints

NFL gambling preview for the Week 12 NFL matchup between the Pats and the Saints. Sunday football betting oddsmakers currently have the Saints listed as 3-point favorites, while the game’s total is sitting at 56½…

New England Patriots vs. New Orleans Saints 8:30 ET

Two of the top offenses in the NFL get it on for a Monday Night Football betting battle between the New England Patriots (7-3, 5-4-1 ATS) and the New Orleans Saints (10-0, 7-3 ATS). This could reasonably be the last huge hurdle between the Saints and an undefeated regular season. The Patriots still look to be picking up the pieces from their miserable loss in Indianapolis two weeks ago in their quest to prove that they are the top team in the NFL.

Team records:
New England: 7-3 SU, 6-4 ATS
New Orleans: 10-0 SU, 7-3 ATS

Bookmaker Sportsbook currently has the host Saints tagged as 1.5-point favorites with a game ‘total’ of 56-points.

Does it get any better than QB Tom Brady and the New England offense? Brady has thrown for 3,049 yards and 20 touchdowns against six interceptions on the season. His favorite targets, Randy Moss and Wes Welker, are both on pace for Pro Bowl seasons. Moss has 63 catches for 925 yards and eight TDs, while Welker has 79 catches for 854 yards and four scores in just eight games. It all adds up to the #2 passing offense in the NFL (302.3 yards per game) and the #2 total offense to boot (416.1 yards per game). The Pats are averaging 29.0 points per game, the third best mark in the league, but they have averaged an even more impressive 37.2 points per game in their L/5.

The defense may have been a huge let down against Indianapolis, but aside from that 35-point outburst, no team has dropped more than 17 points on HC Bill Belichick’s unit since Week 5.

New England may be ranking #2 and #3 in the NFL in a lot of categories, but it is New Orleans that boasts the top ranked offense in the league. The Saints have marched to the tune of 420.6 yards per game and 36.9 points per game this year. Both marks are the best in the league. Though everyone knows that QB Drew Brees can sling the ball all over the field (2,746 yards, 22 TDs in ’09), the balance in the running game is what is making the New Orleans offense so lethal. RBs Pierre Thomas, Mike Bell, and Reggie Bush have combined to carry the football a whopping 275 times for 1,375 yards and 14 touchdowns this year. The Saints have scored at least 24 points in all of their games this year, and have only been held under 30 at home once this season.

However, last week’s 38-7 victory over Tampa Bay marked the first time that they covered a spread since starting 6-0 ATS through seven weeks of play.

There are a heck of a lot of trends that suggest that both of these teams are going to be victorious for their football betting fans on Monday. The Pats are 37-17-2 ATS in their L/56 road games, and 6-2-2 ATS in their L/10 games as underdogs. New Orleans has covered the spread in its L/5 Week 12 games, and is 7-3 ATS in its L/10 home games.
