NFL Week 6 Preview: Giants vs. Saints

NFL gambling preview for the Week 6 NFL matchup between the Giants and the Saints. Sunday football betting Oddsmakers currently have the Saints listed as 3-point favorites versus the Giants, while the game’s total is sitting at 47½…

New York Giants at New Orleans Saints

It’s a battle of the NFC’s Yin and Yang when the New York Giants head to the Big Easy to face the New Orleans Saints.

Oddsmakers have set the Saints as 3.5-point home favorites in the Super Dome.

While the Giants are known for their relentless pass rush and hard-nosed defense, and the Saints are the closest thing NFL fans will get to a free-wheeling college football offense, these two teams haven’t been stuck in these general roles.

Team records:
New York: 5-0 SU, 4-0-1 ATS
New Orleans: 4-0 SU, 4-0 ATS ATS

New York’s offense has come to life behind quarterback Eli Manning. Despite nursing a sore heel, the younger Manning has led the Giants to the second ranked offense in the NFL, which has averaged more than 417 yards per game with 257 of those gains coming from the passing game.

The Saints defense was the biggest thing that held the franchise back last season, but this year the stop unit is holding up its end of the bargain. New Orleans is currently sixth in the league in total yards against, holding opponents to just over 295 yards per game. The Saints have plugged up the ground game and are only giving 16.5 points away every Sunday.

New Orleans is also breaking away from the misconception that it can only move the chains with the passing attack. As good as quarterback Drew Brees and the Saints’ stable of receivers are, the ground game has emerged as one of the best in the NFL. New Orleans is ranked second in rushing offense with the legs of running backs Pierre Thomas, Reggie Bush, and Mike Bell, who will return from a knee injury this week.

This is setting up a great ground battle between the Giants’ running tandem of Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw, who is coming off a monster Week 5 performance against the Oakland Raiders. Bradshaw, who is in his third year with New York, rumbled for 110 yards and two scores in the team’s blowout victory over Oakland to improve to 5-0 (4-1 ATS) on the season. The Giants are rushing for more than 160 yards per game heading into Week 6.

One of the bigger storylines heading into this massive NFC matchup is Saints tight end Jeremy Shockey, who broke into the league with the Giants but left on bad terms. Shockey, who leads New Orleans in receptions with 18 for 162 yards and two touchdowns, sounded off to the local media about facing his former club for the first time.

New York should have Shockey’s replacement, tight end Kevin Boss, back on the field this Sunday. Boss missed last week’s game due to an ankle injury but was back at practice this week and is expected to play. The third-year player has reeled in 10 catches for 143 yards and has become one of Manning’s favorite targets on second and third down.

This will be a homecoming of sorts for Manning, whose father Archie Manning played for the Saints in the 70’s and 80’s. The Mannings grew up in New Orleans and will have a ton of family and friends at the Superdome this weekend. Eli Manning is 1-1 in his career versus the Saints with both games coming at Giants Stadium.

In his most recent game versus New Orleans, Manning passed for only 74 yards with one touchdown and one interception and was outdone by Brees, who finished that game with 132 yards and one score.

Brees heads into this weekend off a bye week which followed two very quiet performances against the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills. He totaled just 362 yards passing in those games and was held without a touchdown pass in each.

Brees hasn’t been held off the scoresheet since Week 7 last year and hasn’t gone back-to-back games without a touchdown pass since 2007 when he failed to score in Weeks 4 and 6 with a bye week in between.

Sunday’s total is set at 47 points. These teams have gone under the total in five of their last seven meetings. New York boasts an over/under count of 3-1-1 while New Orleans has split their four games on either side of the total.
