Let’s take a look at the numbers:

After all McCoy made Kyle Orton look like a Pro-Bowler – and that is no easy task!

The Chargers will go with a new offensive scheme and a new defensive system but will have a lot of the same players that made them a perennial underachiever returning – the same players that played under the same doomed system for years! There are a few names that will be in the fold this year – they should certainly help the obvious areas of need for the Chargers.

Offensively the new name in town is Danny Woodhead who will provide a little stability at the running back position. He won’t be the every down back – Ryan Matthews figures to get one more shot at that distinction but Woodhead should give the backfield a little credibility that Ronnie Brown was unable to provide in the past couple of years. Back to Matthews. Who knows where this guy’s head is at? Off field issues, injuries and an inability to hold onto the ball on the field continue to plague him – he does have all the makings of an elite talent that will never live up to expectation.

That said, if Coach McCoy can weave a little magic, Ryan Matthews could potentially become that dominant force that he was touted to be – I just don’t see it!

As for the passing game – A lot has been made of the lack of arm strength that Philip Rivers has and rightfully so. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Mike McCoy should help Rivers figure a few things out but the weaknesses still exist and predictability looms for the Chargers QB as we head into the season. A once feared receiving corp. now has a rapidly deteriorating Antonio Gates, Denario Alexander, Vincent Brown who returns from a year off due to injury and Malcolm Floyd catching balls from a quarterback that is looking more and more average every year. San Diego’s offensive line isn’t exactly top tier either!

That leaves the defense to shoulder the load this year and San Diego should be pretty good on that side of the ball. A few pieces have moved on in the form of Quentin Jammer and Antonio Garay but the Chargers have employed a youth movement that may take some time to develop. Dwight Freeney was a nice addition – he should be a terrific mentor for the youngsters that are expected to carry this team this year. One area of weakness is at defensive back – there isn’t a whole lot of optimism that they guys they have in camp will be able to stop the Peyton Mannings of the world.

Chargers Betting Outlook:

The San Diego Chargers did what they had to do during the offseason – they cleaned house. But with a totally new coaching staff comes an expectation that it will take some time for the players to adjust to a new regime. The Chargers were an average team heading into the offseason and they really did nothing, outside of changing coaches, to improve their chances on the field. San Diego looks like a .500 team again this year – a tad better than last year with no major improvement!

They may be the second best team in the AFC West but that isn’t saying a whole lot!
