Oakland Raiders vs. Arizona Cardinals Preview

In a non-conference match up in the desert this Sunday afternoon the Arizona Cardinals (1-1) host the Oakland Raiders (1-1). NFL betting lines has the Cardinals as 3.5-point favorites in this game with a total of 39.5.

The Cardinals are a different team this season, as they no longer have QB Kurt Warner and it shows since Arizona only ranks 18th in the league in passing yards per game. However, what is the same is their struggling defense, which ranks 27th in the league and has been poor defending both the pass and the run.

The Raiders are looking to win back-to-back games for the first time in almost 2 years this Sunday. They had high expectations this season and one of the main reasons was they thought they finally had a legit QB in Jason Campbell, but he has struggled and the starter for this game is the more mobile Bruce Gradkowski, who led Oakland to a come from behind win last week.

Cardinals’ RB Beanie Wells has been out with an injury, but hopes to play in this game. Arizona could really use him since the Raiders have a weak run defense.

In their last games the Cardinals were crushed by the Atlanta Falcons 41-7 and the Raiders beat the St. Louis Rams 16-14.

Heading into this game the Cardinals are 1-1 ATS and the Raiders are 0-2 ATS.

QB Derek Anderson, who played terrible in the loss to Atlanta going for 17/31 for 161 yards with 0 TD and 2 INT, leads the Cardinals. He led the Cardinals to exactly 0 3rd down conversions (0/8) and has to play better this Sunday or the Cardinals will lose their second game in a row.

Anderson will be facing a solid Oakland pass defense that ranks 5th in the league and only gave up 135 passing yards to St. Louis last week. Football betting

One bright spot for the Cardinals has been the play of RB Tim Hightower, who rushed for 115 yards and a TD against Atlanta and leads all RB’s with an average of 7.0 yards per carry. He may have a big game since the Raiders’ run defense ranks 29th in the league giving up an average of 140 yards per game.

As stated before the Raiders will make a switch at QB going with Bruce Gradkowski, who was 11/22 for 162 yards with 1 TD in the win over St. Louis. He is a more mobile QB that scrambles well and he will need too on Sunday not so much because the Cardinals have a great pass rush, but because the offensive line of the Raiders is not very good.

The Raiders strength on offense is their rushing attack led by Darren McFadden, who was solid last week rushing for 145 yards averaging 4.8 yards per carry. He is finally living up to his high draft pick expectations and he has the second most rushing yards this season.

The main worry for the Arizona D is their run defense. They rank 31st in the league allowing an average of 153 rushing yards per game and they really stank it up last week allowing Atlanta to rush for 221 yards.

The big question in this game is can either team defend the run?

Both teams have had major issues on defense this season, but the Cardinals are at home and some home cooking is just what they need after getting embarrassed last week. After the loss to the Falcons star WR stated, “This was a wake-up call for us. The way we played today is not acceptable. We have a lot of changes to make on both offense and defense.” They will make those changes in this game and beat the Raiders and cover the spread.

Trends:

Oakland is 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games following an ATS loss and has an Under record of 3-1-1 in their last 5 games as a road underdog of 3.5-10.
Arizona is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games, 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games following an ATS loss, and has an Under record of 5-1 in their last 6 games when they are the favorite.

Pick: Cardinals -4 ½

Jason did OK last week going 4-4 for the week in the college game and while he has yet to be below .500 for any of the 3 weeks he wishes the Redskins could have played some D against the Texans in losing their first game of the season to the Lone Star State.
