New York Jets (9-4)

Gulp. Remember when the Jets were a 9-2, playoff-bound powerhouse? A hell of a lot changed for Gang Green over the last two weeks. It wasn’t the horrific 45-3 loss to New England that set off the biggest alarm bells. The Jets were on the road against a divisional rival with the MVP frontrunner, Tom Brady, playing perhaps the best football of his career. The real problem was the home loss to Miami last week.

Weren’t the Jets supposed to bounce back with a vengeance? Make a huge statement? Pound Miami into dust? Instead, Mark Sanchez melted down for the second straight game. Against the Pats, he threw two picks and posted a 27.8 passer rating. At home to Miami, Sanchez completed just 38.6 per cent of his passes for 216 yards and an interception.

At times like these, we suddenly remember that (a) Sanchez is still just a sophomore, (b) Sanchez has only two and half years as a starting quarterback at the college level or higher and (c) Sanchez is still very new to cold-weather quarterbacking.

Sanchez has started three games in “cold” temperatures, meaning 21 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Over those starts, he averages 185.3 passing yards and has thrown seven interceptions versus just two touchdown passes.

Right now, does it matter that the Jets have an elite defense? Scoring suddenly looks like a big problem.

Pittsburgh Steelers (10-3)

Like the Patriots, the Steelers seem to be hitting their stride just in time for the playoffs – especially on the defensive side of the ball. For the second straight week, Troy Polamalu was the X-factor for Pittsburgh’s fourth-ranked defense. He forced a game-changing fumble on Joe Flacco in Week 13 and pick-sixed Carson Palmer in Week 14.

Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers offense haven’t been particularly hot of late but they don’t have much to prove; they’ve shown the ability to move the ball against any defense. On paper, Big Ben struggles against the Jets, posting a 58.8 passer rating, but that stat is misleading. Roethlisberger hasn’t faced New York since 2007; he’s a much better quarterback and much more the focal point of Pittsburgh’s offense than he was back then.

The pick:

As the 36-point over/under suggests, no one expects a ton of offense in this smashmouth matchup. Sanchez struggles in the cold and, even if New York goes run-heavy, the Steelers’ amazing rush defense allows an NFL-low 60.1 yards per game.

I expect both quarterbacks to take their licks but the Steelers’ home field will pay dividends and their “D” will prey on Sanchez. The Jets’ slide will continue.

Jets vs Steelers prediction: Steelers 21, Jets 10
