As exhibitions, go, this one shouldn’t that bad. As least the pre-game bull elevates it a notch above the slop we usually get from the exhibition season.

The big new here involves New York Giants cornerback Terrell Thomas. If you haven’t heard of him, don’t feel bad. Not even everyone on the Giants roster has heard of the third-year DB.

The Jets certainly hadn’t, at least until a few days ago when Thomas said that the Giants still own the town, and the stadium still belonged to them, and that the Jets haven’t taken over. Good stuff, especially from a guy who isn’t even a starter.

As a non-starter, Thomas will likely get a chance to see serious minutes when the stars hit the bench in this one, probably sometime early in the second period.

And while this game won’t mean much in the way of bragging rights even though these teams don’t meet in the regular season, it should be a fun 60 minutes of football. Sports Betting at Sportsbook.com

A couple of subplots:

1.       Rex Ryan, who never met a cheeseburger he didn’t like, vs. Tom Coughlin, a mother superior type who demands that his players eat all their vegetables. Edge here to the Jets, whose coach no doubt wants this one a bit more than the Giants’ boss.

2.       How much will Mark Sanchez play? Maybe a series more than Eli Manning, who has serious foot problems last season. Sanchez needs to get his timing down with newcomer Santonio Holmes, so expect a few passes in that direction.

3.       Has the Giants defense figured out what was wrong last season and taken any steps to improve? It’s almost inconceivable, but the Giants gave up more points (427) last season than any other team in the NFC not located in St. Louis or Detroit.  New defensive coordinator Perry Fewell was brought in to stop the bleeding, and any change has to be an improvement.

4.       What’s the deal with the playing surface? A few months ago the Giants’ Domenick Hixon was lost for the season when he suffered an ACL tear while working out on the new surface, and at least one teammate == Mathias Kiwanuka — said the turf was at least partially responsible for the injury. If anyone else goes down there will be lots more questions asked about it.

Prediction – Love the Jets in this one, based on motivation alone. It’s hard to win the preseason Super Bowl when you start 0-1. The O/U is a minuscule 33, especially for a first game when defensive assignments are blown left and right. OVER is the play.
