NFL Division Preview – NFC West

In our quest to be the ONLINE LEADER in NFL Gambling & NFL Handicapping information we’re way out ahead of the rest with our 2009 Divisional Previews for all 8 NFL divisions.

We will be covering the entire off season for each team and giving you a preview of the upcoming 2009 season with updates from now through kickoff of Week 1 of the NFL 2009/10 Season.

As per usual, the NFC West was one of the weakest divisions in the NFL last year and the typically feeble Arizona Cardinals took advantage. Few NFL betting picks had the Cardinals to win the division but after they won six games in house, they advanced to the playoffs – and beyond – for the first time in a half century.

The Cardinals are the favorite in the NFC West heading into 2009 but it’s hard to put faith in a team that rarely has winning seasons – never mind back-to-back successful years.

Arizona Cardinals

Odds To Win NFC West – +145

The NFC has had an ominous trend recently of its Super Bowl representatives falling off the face of the Earth. From Tampa Bay, to Carolina, to Philadelphia, to Chicago, to New York, to Seattle, there hasn’t been a lot of consistency in the NFC.

That’s not good news for the Cardinals, who were stripped of both coordinators and several other members of their coaching staff.

The mood in Arizona isn’t a confident one. Some people are skeptical as to whether Kurt Warner can stay healthy two seasons in a row while many pundits have taken notice that players like Anquan Boldin and Darnell Dockett want out.

The Cardinals aren’t use to walking around with a bulls-eye on their back and they’ll struggle this year as they fall back to .500 – or below.

San Francisco 49ers

Odds To Win NFC West – +225

The San Francisco 49ers are not getting much credit in the sportsbook for their decent finish to 2008 and rightfully so. The 49ers will head into the season with either Alex Smith or Shaun Hill as their starting quarterback, which is hard to get excited about.

The 49ers are still atrocious on both lines of scrimmage, which is the worst possible sign. While they’ll be scrappy, more disciplined and better coached, the truth of the matter is that this team simply doesn’t have the talent to compete in the NFC.

Seattle Seahawks

Odds to Win NFC West – +185

The Seattle Seahawks should be back to reclaim their NFC West crown if all goes according to plan.

Last year proved to be a lame duck year as the players knew that Mike Holmgren was on his way out and that fact combined with a horde of injuries sent the team spiraling downwards.

I’m betting management was thrilled to get the fourth pick overall in the draft as Aaron Curry figures to be a big help to the defense. Combined with the acquisition of cornerback Ken Lucas and defensive tackle Corey Redding, the Seahawks have an excellent defense.

Meanwhile, the offense looks strong too after the addition of T.J. Houshmanzadeh. As long as the offensive line is good and Matt Hasselbeck is healthy, this team will win the division.

St. Louis Rams

Odds To Win NFC West – +1015

The St. Louis Rams are in all-out rebuilding mode and you won’t find many betting picks that list them as the West winners.

Head coach Steve Spagnuolo will get this team going in the right direction but as of now, the Rams have no identity.

The defense has some scraps of talent, including a few first-round picks like Tye Hill, Adam Carriker and Chris Long, but they all have to play to their potential for the Rams defense to start performing better.

On offense, the Rams offensive line should be improved, which means Marc Bulger and Steven Jackson should have bounce-back years. Expect the Rams to be far more competitive this year but don’t expect a winning record.

One reply on “2009 NFC West Lines / NFL Preview”

If Seattle can get back to form, they should return to the top of the NFC West.

The Rams are a couple of years away, the 49ers will be better, but they are a year away, and the Cardinals had their year last season.
