Time to dust off that jersey, load up the shopping cart full of chips, dip and adult beverages, and invite your friends over for this special Thursday event: Preseason Football. Gone are the days of waiting and running down your smartphone’s battery trying to get your fix. This is a real life game.

And it’s about time.

New York

Jets fans were hoping that this year wouldn’t be like the past few heading into this year, and for good reason. Gone is Rex Ryan and his wild on and off the field antics, and he is replaced by the defensive mastermind Todd Bowles.

Bowles stepped into a pretty decent team packed with depth on both sides of the line. But an interesting thing happened two days before his inaugural game in Detroit; QB Geno Smith took a shot to the face from LB Ikemefuna Enemkpali. Gone for 6-10 weeks is Smith, and gone forever is Enemkpali.

This Jets team is still fairly loaded with depth on the offensive side of things. Even with Geno Smith out, Bowles still has Ryan Fitzpatrick under center, and there is a supposed summons for Rex Grossman’s services in North Jersey.

The running game will be in good shape this year as well with the tandem of Chris Ivory and Stevan Ridley, not to mention the talent that Fitzpatrick will have to target: Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker and Jeremy Kerly.

Defense will most likely be the Jets strong suit this season, and they will look to get the edge early against the Lions on Thursday night. Todd Bowles may not have as many weapons in NY as he did in Arizona, but he will get them in shape fast enough to hopefully make a splash in the ever improving AFC East.

Detroit

The Lions are hoping that the 2015 season will see them finally take that next step into elite status. Every year this team seems to run into one of two things, and mostly both of them; the Green Bay Packers, and their own efforts of self implosion.

Unlike the Jets, this team does not have the depth on offense, but their starters are explosive enough to get the job done on most weeks. People like Calvin Johnson, Golden Tate and Matthew Stafford are big names in most fantasy circles.

The defensive side of the ball has always held the most question marks for this squad, and hopefully for the devoted fans in Detroit, this year the front office has fixed this, though I’m still not on board here.

If this were the regular season, I would give this game to the Lions without even batting an eye, but since the preseason is all about depth, I don’t think they pull this one out.

NFL Football Betting Trends:

  • Lions are 3-2 in last 5 games
  • Lions were 5-1 in division last season
  • Jets are 2-3 in last 5 games
  • Jets were 1-5 in division last season
  • Lions won last meeting 24-17 (2014)

4* NFL Betting Pick: Detroit -3.5

The Jets depth should be able to win this game, as the starters will be very limited.

NFL Score Prediction: Jets 20 – Lions 14
