N.Y. Jets Super Bowl XLIX Betting Lines & 2014 NFL Preview

2014 New York Predictions

The Jets outperformed most of the experts’ expectations last season with a .500 record that kept them in the AFC playoff race well into December.

2013 Record: 8-8
ATS: 9-6-1
Jets Odds to win the AFC East: +750
Jets Odds to win the AFC Conference: +2800
Jets Odds to win Super Bowl XLIX: +6600

However, the pressure on Rex Ryan entering his sixth season as head coach has been dialed-up after his team missed the postseason for the third-straight year following back-to-back trips to the AFC Championship.

Let’s take a look at the numbers

New York waited to the second round of the 2013 draft to look for its replacement for embattled quarterback Mark Sanchez and eventually settled on West Virginia’s Geno Smith.

Smith went on to start all 16 games last season with mixed results. He did throw for 3,046 yards, but his completion percentage was just 55.8 percent and he tossed 21 interceptions verse just 12 touchdowns.

The Jets made things interesting this offseason by signing Michael Vick to compete for the starting job.

Ryan was successful at getting back to the basics that led to his early success with a running game that was ranked sixth in the NFL complementing a defense that was third at stopping the run.

The Jets also added running back Chris Johnson to the mix after he was released from Tennessee and they selected free safety Calvin Pryor in the first round of this year’s draft to help bolster a pass defense that was ranked 22nd in the league.

To add some veteran help in the defensive secondary, New York signed former Dolphins’ cornerback Dimitri Patterson and it picked-up cornerback Johnny Patrick, who was released by San Diego.

New York also added a few new weapons to the passing game with the selection of tight end Jace Amaro and wide receivers’ Jalen Saunders and Shaq Evans in some of the later rounds of the daft after the offense finish ranked 22nd in average passing yards last year. The Jets used free agency to make the biggest splash by bringing in wide receiver Eric Decker after he caught 87 balls for 1,288 yards and 11 touchdowns while playing for Denver last season.

Jets Betting Outlook

If Vick and Johnson can play anywhere near their former level of play, New York could be a formidable force on offense but that is a mighty big if. Chances are Vick will show some flashes of his old self, but eventually succumb to another injury, which has plagued him throughout his career.

Bovada has set the projected win total for the Jets this season at seven with a moneyline of -140 favoring the OVER and if everything goes right this would still be a solid play.

Unfortunately after going through New York’s schedule which includes games against the AFC West and the NFC North, I can only come up with seven wins and a third-place finish in the division.
