2008 Record: 9-7
ATS: 7-9

As the New York Jets move into New Jets Stadium, they are going to have a number of new faces to introduce just one year before the big move. Head coach Eric Mangini has been swapped for Rex Ryan, Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre was passed for Mark Sanchez and Laveranues Coles has departed.

While the offense got the short end of the stick in the offseason, the new-look Jets will be built around what should a very dominant defense.

Mangini left a good foundation with Kris Jenkins, Darrelle Revis and David Harris and the Jets added Bart Scott, Lito Sheppard and Jim Leonhard.

The Jets have enough talent to be in the conversation for the best defense in the league and now that they have Ryan, who coordinated the Ravens stellar defense in previous years, this Gang Green might actually play as good as they look on paper.

The defense better be good, though, as the offensive outlook is fairly bleak. Sanchez will take over the quarterback position at some point as Kellen Clemens is just there to keep the seat warm.

But regardless of who the quarterback is, the Jets will need to play mistake-free on offense if they want to have a shot at the playoffs.

While Sanchez is the Jets decorated draft pick, running back Shonn Greene could turn out to be a steal in the third round.

And while the Jets do have some blue chips in Sanchez, Greene and Jerricho Cotchery, they just aren’t ready to compete right now with a rookie quarterback.

Regardless of what Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan did in their first years, the reality is that those player were the exception and not the rule. For now, look for Sanchez to provide some growing pains as the Jets try to get to .500.

“I’m a year early – thanks.”

Not since legendary QB Joe Namath has Jets fans been this excited since the team traded up to draft USC QB Mark Sanchez with the fifth pick in this year’s draft. Although Sanchez seems to have all the tools to become a solid QB in this league, the 2009 season will present its share of problems for the rookie QB. Thomas Jones returns as the starting RB and will look to return to the end zone often, as he did in the 2008. WR Jerricho Cotchery will need to have a big year, as he is the clearly going to be Sanchez’s number one man with Chansi Stuckey as the number two. TE Dustin Keller should be a big part of the passing attack in 2009 as well. The Jets defense will have some holes even with monster nose tackle Kris Jenkins returning and LB Bart Scott coming over from the Ravens. The Jets are a season or two away from challenging New England for the division title. The Jets finish the year with a 7-9 record and won’t be in the playoffs.

Growing pains are gonna dominate the Jets this year. With Thomas Jones, and multi-talented Leon Washington helping out Sanchez, the Jets might not be as woeful as some are pridicting. A strong D will keep the Jets in many games. I just don’t think the Offense will be able to score enough to compliment the D. A last place finish in the division is certain – so is optimism for the next few years.

Rookie QB’s are rough on defenses and Sanchez will be no exception. He does have a solid run committee behind him but not a deep set of WR’s or TE’s. Translation: Sanchez learns to read blitzes or finishes 09 on IR. The defense may be better with player and coaching changes but a rookie QB will make them earn every yard of field position. I can’t see the Jets any better than 4th in the division and 6 wins is generous
