New Orleans Saints vs. Arizona Cardinals Preview

In a NFC match up in the desert this Sunday the Arizona Cardinals (2-2) host the defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints (3-1). NFL betting lines has New Orleans as 6.5-point favorites in this game with a total of 44.5.

The Cardinals are tied for first place in the NFC West with Seattle and St. Louis, but their passing offense has struggled, which why is they will be making a QB change handing the reigns to Max Hall, who is an undrafted rookie. You think the team misses Kurt Warner? Yeah, maybe just a little and by a little I mean a lot. Hall takes over for Derek Anderson, who has the lowest QB rating in the league and has 5 INT’s.

The Saints’ offense led the league last season, but they are only averaging 19.8 points per game this season, which is 12 points less than last season. Drew Brees has played great, but the rushing offense has not been producing and the defense is still a concern in the Big Easy.

In their last games the Saints were less than impressive beating a weak Carolina Panthers team 16-14 and the Cardinals were crushed 41-10 by the San Diego Chargers.

Heading into this NFC game the Cardinals are 1-3 ATS and the Saints are 2-2 ATS.

Drew Brees leads the Saints and their 5th ranked passing attack and he has a solid WR corps. Last week against Carolina he had a good game going 33/48 for 275 yards with 1 TD and 0 INT. Brees may have to put up good numbers again in this game, especially if he continues to get no help from the running game. Football betting

This game is not a good match up for the Cardinals in terms of the aerial attack, as their pass defense has been pretty weak this season giving up an average of 233 yards per game through the air. If their front line D cannot get to Brees and their secondary continues to struggle the Arizona offense will have to put up a ton of points because New Orleans will.

The Saints’ rushing offense ranks 30th in the league and Reggie Bush is out with a broken leg and Pierre Thomas may miss the game with an ankle injury. Still, no matter who runs the ball for the Saints they will likely be successful facing a Cardinals’ run defense that is giving up the 3rd most rushing yards per game in the league.

The Cardinals’ D defiantly have to play better this Sunday than they did last Sunday when they gave up 419 total yards (239 passing yards180 rushing yards) to the Chargers.

Max Hall takes over at QB and last week against the Chargers when he came in for Anderson he was 8/14 for 82 yards. Arizona has to protect him, which they did not do last week when Hall was sacked 6 times.

Not only will Hall be playing behind a struggling offensive line, but also his WR corps is hurting, as Steve Breaston and Early Doucet are likely out with injuries. All Pro WR Larry Fitzgerald will have to step up and play well even though he will likely see a lot of double coverage in this game. One thing Hall has going for him is that he will be facing a Saints’ secondary that has been mediocre this season.

Arizona RB’s Tim Hightower and Beanie Wells can really help Hall out by picking up some yards on the ground, but this duo had a combined 43 rushing yards last week against San Diego. They will improve upon that total this week since they will be facing a Saints’ rushing defense that has given up an average of 138.3 rushing yards per game.

Hightower and Wells are the key to the game, as if they can run the ball it will take a lot of pressure of Hall and it will keep Brees on the sidelines.

A struggling offense, a struggling defense, and a new starting QB generally does not lead to success and it will not in this game either, as the Saints will easily win this game and cover the spread.

Trends:

New Orleans is 3-9 ATS in their last 12 games, 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games, and has an Under record of 7-2 in their last 9 games after an ATS loss.
Arizona is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games, 10-3 ATS in their last 13 games as an underdog, and has an Over record of 5-1 in their last 6 games.

Pick: Cardinals -6.5
