New Orleans Saints (5-3)

The Saints needed a big statement on Sunday night against Pittsburgh to silence their critics – including me – and they stepped up.

After seeing Drew Brees throw seven picks to Cleveland and Arizona and after seeing an easy schedule puff up their defensive stats, I thought the Saints would flop against Pittsburgh. They didn’t.

Most impressive was their “D’s” performance against a very solid Steelers offense. They held Pittsburgh to 279 total yards, including just 195 passing yards, no touchdowns and a pick from Ben Roethlisberger. Suddenly, the Saints look a lot more legit as the NFL’s No. 3 overall defense.

Drew Brees also emerged with his best game under center since…well, maybe his best game of the year. He completed over 77 per cent of his passes for 305 yards, two scores and one pick against a Steelers pass defense that suddenly looks a bit overrated.

Carolina Panthers (1-6)

Some bettors may get pumped up about Carolina as a 6.5-point underdog since it lost by just two points at New Orleans in Week 4. Be careful with that.

The Panthers are bad on offense. Unbelievably bad. They’ve scored 10 points or fewer in four of their seven games. Their season high is 20 points. They’ve scored 85 points in seven games this season; the next lowest team total is 118.

The biggest reason for Carolina’s putrid attack is, of course, quarterbacking. It seems Jimmy Clausen and Matt Moore are competing to see who can suck the worst. Moore teased with a 308-yard, two-TD game in Week 7 against San Francisco but crashed back to Earth at St. Louis last week, throwing three picks. Still, all signs point to John Fox starting him over Clausen again this week.

The Panthers’ quarterback play has been so bad that it’s finally rubbed off on their usually dominant running game. DeAngelo Williams leads the team with just 361 rushing yards and one score. With him hurt last week, Jonathan Stewart got his chance to step up and tallied 30 yards on 14 carries. I don’t fully blame the two; it’s hard to move the chains when you face nothing but eight-man fronts.

The pick:

Last week might have been New Orleans’ turning point. Their narrow escape against Carolina earlier this season was very “Super Bowl hangover”; they simply looked past the Panthers. After humbling losses to the Browns and Cardinals since then, I don’t see New Orleans stumbling this time out. In fact, I see a beatdown coming.

I know the Panthers are fourth in the NFL against the pass, but that stat also reflects teams grabbing early leads and closing them out on the ground. Brees solved Pittsburgh and he’ll solve Carolina, too.
