Tom Brady seems to make any receiver on the depth chart a star. Andy Dalton is getting there. Who needs a cast of players when you have a guy like A.J. Green catching the ball. With both of these teams being infused with more and more youth each season, the AFC title hunt could get a lot more entertaining and interesting.
New England
We all know the Patriots blueprint. Attempt to run the ball while Tom Brady picks apart defenses with his precision passing. If the team falls behind or the running game gets stopped, then it’s all Brady all day. You would think teams would know how to stop it by now.
On the year, Brady has 1,014 yards on 93 of 158 passing with 7 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. His biggest beneficiary has been Julian Edelman. On the year, wide receiver Edelman has caught 34 passes for 319 yards and 2 touchdowns. Rookie wide receiver Kenbrell Thompkins has been stellar, too, catching 15 passes for 257 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Fellow rookie receiver Aaron Dobson has 11 catches for 118 yards and a touchdown. Danny Amendola, fighting injury, has 104 yards receiving as well. On the ground, Stevan Ridley leads the team with 174 yards on 47 carries. LaGarrette Blount has come up fast as of late, rushing for 155 yards and a touchdown.
The young Patriot defense has been tenacious this season. Jerod Mayo leads the team in tackles with 24. He’s also got a sack on the year. Leading the team in sacks is Chandler Jones with 3. Cincinnati
Could this be the year Andy Dalton and AJ Green finally get over the hump? The Bengals think so and have been showing it. Despite the 2-2 record, Cincy remains dangerous with its potent offense and improving defense.
On the season Dalton has completed 94 of 148 passes for 1,003 yards, 5 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. His leading receiver, Green, has 26 receptions for 300 yards and 3 touchdowns. Tight end Jermaine Gresham is next with 181 yards on 18 catches.
On the ground, the Bengals went out and drafted Giovanni Bernard to go in tandem with Benjarvis Green-Ellis. Bernard is leading by a hair, rushing for 147 yards and 2 touchdowns on 32 carries. Green-Ellis has 52 carries for 142 yards and 2 touchdowns.
On defense, Vontaze Burfict has been the clean leader. Leading the team in tackles with 26, Burfict also has an interception and a pass defended. Carlos Dunlap has 3 sacks on the season while Geno Atkins has 2.5 of his own. Four total players have an interception.
