Until DeFlateGate is passed the Pats are going to be a hot topic. The Panthers have their own problems.

New England

The whole situation for the Patriots has made this preseason may more interesting than it would be otherwise. There is a very real chance that Jimmy Garropolo is going to be meaningful action in the regular season and these games might be a little bit of a preview.

So far the early returns are pretty good.

Based on what we have seen so far it looks like it will be Brady and Jimmy G which is a good sign for bettors.

I am still not sold on the defense of the Pats but I am not sure they are going to be exposed by Carolina. The Panthers will want to run the ball and New England does not have big Vince Wilfork eating space anymore.

They get a break in the coverage side of things because Carolina is still figuring out what their receiving corps is going to look like after losing their top guy.

Carolina

The Panthers are coming off back to back division titles but have suffered a huge blow with the loss of top receiver Kelvin Benjamin. Replacing him will be near impossible.

They are going to try with Devin Funchess who is similar in stature and was slotted to start opposite Benjamin to give them a bit of a twin towers effect. He might be featured a little more in this one.

At quarterback, Cam Newton has nothing to prove coming into the season but third stringer Joe Webb has looked good. It just might keep the very gifted athlete with the Panthers.

Carolina can survive the loss of Benjamin if the defense is among the tops in the league. They have an awesome linebacking corps who will probably not see a ton of action tonight to keep them healthy. They need their edge rushers to given them more and second year man Kony Ealy has looked good.

Having already lost one significant player to injury this season you have to wonder if “Riverboat Ron” plays things a little more safely than he might have otherwise. It would be hard to blame him.

NFL Football Betting Trends:

  • Patriots are 2-9 ATS in their last 11 games on grass.
  • Panthers are 11-5-1 ATS in their last 17 home games.
  • Over is 11-5 in Patriots last 16 games overall.
  • Under is 5-1 in Panthers last 6 home games.
  • Under is 5-2 in Panthers last 7 games on grass.
  • Patriots are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 meetings.

4* NFL Betting Pick: New England -1

A pick’em here but I think the Pats might be the way to go on the road as they try and get Jimmy G as ready as possible.

NFL Score Prediction:  New England 28 – Carolina 20

I know that looks like a huge cover but remember to go slow this week. The real stuff is still a couple of weeks away.
