2009 Record: 10-6

The New England Patriots appear to be diminishing slowly, but when you’ve got Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, that’s typically good enough to get you 10 wins and a playoff spot.

On the surface, they appear to be a team that is deteriorating as the years go by, but when you look at almost everyone they have lost, those coaches, general managers or players seem to fail elsewhere.

Especially on the sidelines, coaches like Charlie Weis, Romeo Crennel and Josh McDaniels, and even former general manager, Scott Pioli, haven’t looked so hot.

On the field, the Patriots have some work to do but they still have another run in them.

On offense, Brady, Randy Moss and Wes Welker means this will again be one of the highest scoring teams in the league. But they need depth and there is some potential for that to be there.

Going down the veteran route, the Pats signed Tory Holt to a one-year deal. He has looked awful the last two seasons but the Patriots have revived players like him before. Down the youth-route, the Patriots, Brandon Tate is looking much better in his second season and the team spent a third-round pick on Taylor Price, who could help right away.

The most interesting element will be Julian Edelman, who is a very similar player to Welker. With both of them healthy and with Moss on the outside, Brady should have lots of weapons.

In the backfield, Laurence Maroney, Sammy Morris and Fred Taylor will get the job done.

The defense is where the Patriots have been deteriorating more so and it’s unclear if they have improved at all.

The linebacking corps contains Derrick Burgess, Tully Banta-Cain, Jerod Mayo and Gary Guyton as starters. Brandon Spikes, formerly of Florida, might be a nice pickup that can play sooner than later.

In the secondary, Jonathan Wilhite and Darius Butler are a year older and they’ll be joined by first-round pick, Devin McCourty.

Once again, the Patriots seem to have a group of rather anonymous players on defense but this has worked for a number of years. If Banta Cain and Burgess can combine for 15 sacks again and a few other players can step up and make some plays, this defense should be more than good enough to supplement the explosive offense.

Patriots 2010 Outlook

On the whole, the Patriots are a very smart team and that alone is good enough to get you wins. But with a fully healthy offense, they should still be the class of the AFC East.
