2008 Record: 11-5
ATS: 9-7

Hard to believe that an 11-5 team will be adding Tom Brady into its lineup but that’s exactly what the New England Patriots will be doing this year.

On the personnel front, the Patriots did lose a share of players but no one who was really going to be a huge part of the foundation.

Quarterback Matt Cassel was traded away, as was cornerback Ellis Hobbs. Aside from that, the departures of Rodney Harrison and Mike Vrabel will curtail some leadership but both players are over the hill.

The biggest loss might be the one on the sidelines as offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has moved to head coach Denver.

But with Brady stepping back into a lineup that entails Randy Moss, Wes Welker and now Joey Galloway, not many people are overly concerned. Don’t be surprised if the Patriots come out and run the ball a whole lot more than most people expect because they now have a full stable of backs.

Laurence Maroney is still presence, as is Sammy Morris, BenJarvis Green-Ellis and Kevin Faulk, while Fred Taylor was added as well.

On defense, the Patriots were old and slow a couple of years back but they’ve slowly morphed into a younger, faster defense.

The additions of veterans like Leigh Bodden and Shawn Springs should shore up a weak secondary while the growth of Brandon Meriweather and Jerod Mayo into starters should add some playmaking.

On the whole, this defense still has some holes at linebacker as Tedy Bruschi needs to be relegated to a minor role and there is an opening at one of the outside linebacking spots with Vrabel gone.

But considering how many points this team is going to put up on offense, this defense is more than capable of doing their share to get this team to the Super Bowl.

A lot of people are expecting the Patriots to be the 2009 Super Bowl champs and at this point, there isn’t much reason to doubt them. With an explosive offense, a capable defense and the best head coach of this generation, it might be foolish to doubt them.

The Patriots are the odds on favorite to not only win the AFC East, but another Super Bowl. If Tom Brady is back 100% they will definitely score a ton of points.

I still think their may be some question marks with an aging defense that may break down as the season wears on.

The Patriots will welcome back their Pro Bowl QB Tom Brady for the 2009 season. Without Brady, New England was unable to make it to the playoffs in 2008. A healthy Brady will be a boost to the Patriots offense, making them one of the highest scoring teams in the NFL this season. New England is poised to take back control of the division and will return as a Super Bowl favorite. RB Laurence Maroney returns as the starting tailback once again. Maroney played only three games last season all coming late in the year as he missed the first half of the season with injuries. WR Randy Moss will return and should be happy to see Brady back under center. Moss totaled 98 receptions, 1,493 yards and 23 touchdowns catches in first year as Tom Brady’s teammate. The Pats defense will be equally as good with LB Teddy Bruschi and strong safety Brandon Meriweather. The Patriots will finish at 14-2 and easily win the division title.

Pats win the division, the AFC and lose in the Super Bowl. At least 1 of these predictions will come true! It has to be tough on the team though when Brusci, Vrabel and Harrison all leave the squad within a few months of each other. They will overcome though!

The Pats are going to be fine as long as the Brady to Moss combination lives. The backfield is good enough to carry the offense but they don’t need to and aren’t asked to. The defense is losing its talent but with that offense the D is only asked for a few stops a game. Easily take the division and should grab a bye in the AFC.
