How Can New York Win?

For coach Rex Ryan’s ballclub, the calling card is defense, but the true point of urgency is the offense. New York could allow only 17 points to Tom Brady and the rest of the Patriots, but if the visiting team posts only 14 points, that won’t matter very much. The Jets’ inconsistent quarterback, Mark Sanchez, will need to put up at least 20 points for New York to feel confident.

The Jets have struggled markedly this season on the offensive side of the ball. It’s why they got shut out at home by Green Bay, scored only nine points against Baltimore, and have barely scraped by in overtime against bad teams like the Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions.

The Jets have gotten very lucky this year, but in this game, they’ll have to be authoritative and productive on offense. Sanchez must take the easy seven-yard pass instead of forcing a long ball into double or triple coverage.

If Sanchez is patient and the Jets help him out with a smart game plan from offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, New York could make some noise.

How Can New England Win?

If Sanchez is the key for New York, then New England needs to shut down the Jets. The battle between the Patriots’ offense and the Jets’ defense will become hugely significant only if one side dominates the other; what we’re likely to see is both sides winning their fair share of battles.

Tom Brady will land some punches against the Jets’ defense, which will return fire and halt some of the Patriots’ drives. The real battleground comes back to the matchup between the New York offense and the New England defense. The Patriots’ defense looked genuinely bad for two and a half quarters against the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 25. However, that was a short week for coach Bill Belichick’s team, which has had a chance to rest since then.

If the Patriots bounce back on defense after their poor performance in Detroit, they’ll likely gain the leverage they need to ground the Jets on Monday night.

Outlook

In the NFL regular season, games don’t get any bigger than the one between the New York Jets and the New England Patriots, two teams with imposing head coaches, high expectations, and boatloads of swagger. The Patriots were the team of the past decade, while the Jets are the NFL’s most controversial, raucous and talked-about franchise.

These teams have the same overflowing attitude of confidence, but they win games in very different ways. New York won the matchup between these two teams in the second week of the season, back at the New Meadowlands stadium in New Jersey. Now, the Patriots get the Jets in New England with a chance to rocket to the top spot in the AFC.

It will be an electric evening in Massachusetts, to be sure.

Simply stated, New England has played much better football this season than the Jets, who are lucky to be where they are. Tom Brady versus Mark Sanchez is an even matchup in New Jersey, but it’s a mismatch in a night game in New England.

Take the Patriots to cover the spread.

Pick: Patriots -3.5

Yeah it’s funny, the Patriots now remind me a lot of the Pats team(s) we used to see earlier in the decade (Deion Branch, Brady ruling the roost by spreading the ball around to relative nobodies, etc.) I don’t know if they ever got away from this (maybe it just seemed like they did with Randy Moss) but the Pats seem to be back to their good ole team-oriented style. That’s probably a good thing for them looking forward.
