MNF – Chargers vs. Jaguars Week 13 Gambling Preview

The NFL season is a marathon, not a sprint. If you don’t believe that, then just ask Norv Turner and the San Diego Chargers.

After winning four of their first fives games to move out in front on top of the AFC West, San Diego has since lost six straight to fall to the basement of the division, and by all accounts may already be too far out of reach for one of the AFC playoff spots.

The Chargers will make the trip to Florida looking to finally break out of their slump in an effort to salvage what is left of their season against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but it may be a case of too little, too late.

That concept isn’t lost on new Jaguars’ head coach Mel Tucker, who takes over for Jack Del Rio with a ton of work to do. Tucker immediately identified a couple of key problems with the team, and made the decision to shift some personnel around with former wide receivers coach Johnny Cox moving on, while offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter takes over control of the quarterbacks.

It is no secret that rookie quarterback Blaine Gabbert was not ready to be pushed into a starter’s role so early in his career, and although he has made some progress, Jacksonville ranks last in the NFL in total passing yards and that number won’t get better immediately. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The Jaguars will continue to rely heavily on running back Maurice Jones-Drew and a stout defense that has kept them in games all year, but it may not be enough this week against a determined San Diego team that should have a sense of urgency about their game.

The Chargers have lacked focus and the killer instinct to put teams away, and it may have already cost them their season. Quarterback Phillip Rivers has already thrown for 3,211 yards and 16 touchdowns, but he also has thrown 17 interceptions and fumbled six times.

For San Diego to salvage what is left of their season they will need Rivers to do a better job of protecting the football, while establishing a rushing attack early with running back Ryan Mathews to take some of the heat off of their Pro Bowl signal-caller.

The talent is there for the Chargers to get the job done on the road, but now it comes down to being able to execute when it matters the most.
