Minnesota

Are we seeing the beginning of the Joe Webb era in Minnesota?  There was every reason to expect the Vikings to fold against the Eagles but with Joe Webb at the controls and a healthy Adrian Peterson they beat a very good Philadelphia team that was riding high.  All of this makes it look like at the very least we might be witnessing the beginning of the Leslie Frazier era in Minnesota.  Which looks like it could be a good thing for Vikings fans.

Watching Minnesota on a rare Tuesday nighter left me wondering “what if” about the Vikings.  What if they had gotten away from Favre sooner?  What if Adrian Peterson wasn’t so injury prone?  And a lot of other “what ifs” as well.  This is a talented team that took too long to realize any of its potential.  This closing game might be the most interesting between two teams that are already eliminated from the playoffs.

It is the last game of the season against a division rival with a new QB being broken in.  With their new coach leading the way the effort has been great for Minnesota and I think it will be again in their season finale.  Minnesota has a huge overall advantage on defense.  If they can flex that muscle on Sunday they can finish the season on a very positive note despite early season struggles.

Detroit

Don’t look now but Detroit is on a three game win streak, all hard fought victories against opponents with better records than theirs.  There are probably very few people who can remember a recent run of success like this for the Lions who are looking to finish strong by beating the Vikings in their season finale.

To achieve more consistent success Detroit has to continue improving on defense.  Their first round pick Ndamukong Suh has proved to be a beast in the middle of their line and the Lions started their recent run by knocking out Packers QB Aaron Rodgers in a 7-3 victory over Green Bay (yes that score is accurate).  With the weapons the Lions have on offense all the defense has to do is keep the team in the game, especially at home where they play much better.  Lately they have been doing so.

The Lions also have a big what if of their own.  What if Matthew Stafford hadn’t gotten hurt?  Even without Stafford’s golden arm the Lions are able to move the ball and score.  Calvin Johnson and Brandon Pettigrew are emerging as a top WR/TE duo and when he is in the game Jahvid Best scare teams with his speed.  Best should be healthy for this one and I think they will try and feature him to get him on track for next year.

The Pick: Both teams have momentum but Detroit is at home and not playing a rookie QB making just his second start.  Advantage goes to the Lions who continue their winning ways.
