Minnesota

It is amazing what a win can do for a team.  Even skin of your teeth overtime win over a less than impressive opponent can have amazing healing power.  Such is the case for the Vikings who beat the Cardinals last week in OT after battling back from a double digit deficit.  Brett Favre had a record setting day so the heat he has been facing has been reduced to a simmer for the time being.  It was only one win.  The Vikings need to string a few of these together if they want to be considered a team to be reckoned with in the NFC.

Last week Brett Favre threw for a career best 446 yards.  An impressive total but you would have thought his career best might have been a little bit higher.  Lost among the euphoria around the comeback and the victory is that he also threw two interceptions.  Arizona isn’t exactly known for their stellar defense so his turnovers are still a problem.  Still, he looked like vintage Favre in the 4th quarter and beyond which has to excite Vikings fans.

For the last two years these teams have split in the regular season with each team winning their home games.  They have also split in terms of ATS with the winner of the game also covering.  Only one time during this period has their been an upset, when the Vikings lost at Chicago last year as nine point favourites.  All the statistical data seems to favour fading the road team which the Vikings this weekend.  This has some real value given the really short spread.

Chicago

Chicago may be the least impressive 5-3 team in the league.  Last week they held on to grab a 3 point victory over a winless Buffalo Bills squad up in Toronto.  Still they are keeping pace with Green Bay and have yet to lose a divisional game this season.  If they can keep that streak alive on Sunday they may be able to eliminate the rival Vikings from the playoff equation.  There is a lot at stake this weekend.

The Bears were outplayed last weekend against Buffalo but because Jay Cutler didn’t force the action they were able to emerge victorious.  Chicago was outgained by more than 100 yards but avoided the mistakes that have plagued them in their three losses.  Still this not a good offensive team despite their record.  So far the Mike Martz experiment is a failure as Cutler is erratic most of the time and the Bears don’t have the right playmakers to make his offense go.

Matt Forte seems to have been forgotten and is on pace for another disappointing season rushing the ball.  Granted the Bears offensive line is partly to blame but Forte is running as if he expects the play to blow up even before it starts.

As expected he has become more of a weapon in the passing game but without balance it is going to be tough for Chicago to thrive with their current personnel.

Any game where the defense isn’t stout is going to be a problem for the Bears.

The Pick: You have to like Minnesota with some momentum coming into this one.  The Bears play good D but their offense if so bad that Minny can probably survive the inevitable miscues Favre makes.
