Miami Dolphins vs. Minnesota Vikings Preview

Chad Henne said earlier this week that he did what the team needed him to do to win (last Sunday at Buffalo). Which was not much, actually. Just don’t screw up. Three field goals and one touchdown later, the Fins had a victory – ugly as it may have been. This week, though, the dynamic changes, and Miami finds out if Henne looks like he’s ready to make the team a playoff threat. If the Dolphins can move the ball against a terrific (and rested) Minnesota defense, Henne will have to be a little more than a game manager.

Truth be told, Miami’s defense won that game in Buffalo, and Henne spent most of the afternoon either turning and handing off to Ronnie Brown or Ricky Williams, or trying to get comfortable with new wideout Brandon Marshall. Marshall had eight catches, but all of it was short stuff. Perhaps wary of Buffalo’s solid secondary, the Fins hardly bothered to go over the top of the defense. There wasn’t much that Minnesota scouts could glean from that game, except maybe that the jury is (still) out on Henne. Sports Betting at Sportsbook.com

Will the Dolphins’ offense be able to move the ball against Minnesota? Don’t be stunned if the Vikings employ the same strategy against Miami that the Dolphins used against Buffalo – stack the line of scrimmage and dare the quarterback to win the game. In fact, there could be a lot of that in the AFC East, where only New England’s Tom Brady makes that strategy unworkable.

Early betting is heavy (71-29 percent) on the Vikings as bettors figure Minnesota is already in semi-desperate mode and can ill-afford to fall two games back on the Packers in the NFC North. But every time Dolphins fans check out the schedule taped to the refrigerator, they get physically ill. After Brett Favre, Adrian Peterson and the Vikings, the Dolphins face (in order) the Jets, Patriots, Packers, Steelers, Bengals and Ravens. Nasty stuff.

Picks: Vikings -5-5 and Over (39)

One score by the Vikings early could open this game wide open and force the Dolphins and Henne to put the ball in the air. No doubt Miami coach Tony Sparano would love the same 60-40 run/pass ratio that was enough to squeak out a win in Buffalo, but that won’t fly for long in today’s NFL, especially against the strong defensive teams that are lined up on the schedule.

Liking Minnesota here as the Vikings will have had 10 days since opening on Sept. 9 at New Orleans.
