2010 Record: 7-9
ATS: 8-8

The Miami Dolphins finished 7-9 last season but their owner seems to believe that it’s their turn to be a Super Bowl contender. On paper, it’s possible, but there are a lot of hurdles that they’ll have to jump – including two other potential Lombardi Trophy favorites in their own division.

The Dolphins had another productive offseason, first by making a big splash in acquiring Brandon Marshall and then supplementing their team with another quality draft.

As we all know, they are run by Bill Parcells and coach by Tony Sparano, which means they will be one tough team to play each and every week. Last year, without Chad Penning and Ronnie Brown, they still managed to tread water with Chad Henne and Ricky Williams stepping up.

The year of growth for Henne is what is really propelling the optimism for this team.

Marshall with team with Greg Camarillo, a decent slot weapon, Davon Bess and Brian Hartline to give the Dolphins a decent group of wideouts. The addition of Marshall will have a ripple effect through the offense as Henne will have a go-to guy, opposing defense won’t be able to key in on the running game and the other wide receivers should have less defensive attention.

On defense, the Dolphins made some big moves whether it being on the plus side, by adding Karlos Dansby to their linebacking corps or spending a first-round pick on lineman Jared Odrick, or on the minus side, when they released Gibril Wilson, Joey Porter and Jason Taylor.

But quietly, the best move could be the addition of defensive coordinator Mike Nolan, who was inexplicably fired from Denver after doing such a good job with the team.

On top of that, the Dolphins defense is a young group that is now a year older and wise. Vontae Davis and Sean Smith have quietly made an ascent up the ranks to become among the best cornerbacking tandems in the league. Meanwhile, Philip Merling, Cam Wake and Channing Crowder are getting closer to their primes.

This Dolphins team is unspectacular, but they are scrappy and consistent. They have improved on both sides of the ball, adding playmakers on offense and plugging a few holes on defense.

In a tough conference, the Dolphins will now have to start leaning on Henne. He’s got plenty of support but 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions – his numbers from last year – won’t cut it.

Dolphins 2010 Outlook

Henne has to improve and if he does, this team should be in the playoffs competing for a Super Bowl.
