Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl XLIX Betting Lines & 2014 NFL Preview

2014 Kansas City Predictions

The Kansas City Chiefs had a very impressive turnaround season under first year coach Andy Reid. They benefited from a very weak first half of the schedule and used that to get out of the gates rolling to an 11-5 record.

2013-2014 Record: 11-5
ATS: 9-7
Chiefs odds to win the 2015 AFC West Division: +600
Chiefs odds to win the 2015 AFC Conference: 22-1
Chiefs odds to win the 2015 Super Bowl: 50-1

Let’s take a look at the numbers

Despite making the playoffs, the season ended horribly though, as they were on the wrong end of the second biggest comeback in playoff history at the hands of the Indianapolis Colts.

Despite scoring 44 points in that playoff game, the defense surrendered 45 and the Chiefs took the offseason looking to bolster their defense and turn around a disastrous ending.

With the addition of offensive minded Andy Reid, the Chiefs took to the West Coast offense and ran it all the way to the 7th most points scored at 26.9 a game.

The bounce back season for Alex Smith was just what Reid envisioned as Smith was productive and very efficient.

While looking to add speed to the offense, the Chiefs drafted RB De’Anthony Thomas out of Oregon in hopes that he would also return kickoffs and punts. Explosive plays were what the Chiefs lacked as they only averaged 337.2 points per game, good for 21st in the league.

The ability to hit the home run play for KC will be the difference maker for them this season.

On the other side of the ball, the Chiefs looked to address several holes they had.

After being carved up in the playoffs, Kansas City went out and added key veterans such as ILB Joe Mays and DT Vance Walker to improve the front seven, which surrendered 120.2 rushing yards per game and had them near the back of the pack at 22nd place in the NFL.

The drubbing handed to them at the end of the year really opened the Chiefs eyes as they also drafted young talent for the defense to help anchor the foundation for years to come.

Chiefs Betting Outlook:

Kansas City was a very modest 9-7 ATS and were 7-9 O/U against the spread. This made them a very tough team to either bet on or against.

With a very efficient offense that relied on ball control rather than explosive plays, the Chiefs tended to have their totals placed relatively low.

The weak first half schedule they faced really helped them get going, but as the competition increased, the Chiefs did not step up their game.

The best spots to back KC will be when they are in the underdog role. The lack of explosive plays will make it very hard for the Chiefs to cover spreads as a favorite, mixed in with the fact that they are now the hunted as opposed to the hunters, will prove to be a tough season for them.

Look for the Chiefs to finish 8-8 taking a step back from last year’s playoff success.
