Battle of the Bad – Raiders Host Jags in Week 2

Unless you have Maurice Jones-Drew or Darren McFadden on your Fantasy team, the interest level in the game between the Jags and Raiders in Week 2 doesn’t exactly jump off the page. Both teams were expected to lose in Week 1 but only 1 team was even competitive.

The Oakland Raiders enter Week 2 with a little optimism with Terrelle Pryor behind center while the Jags – they will turn to backup Chad Henne to guide them after an injury to Blain Gabbert.

How bad were the Jacksonville Jaguars last week? The scored just one safety on the way to a 28-2 loss versus the Chiefs – on their home turf!

Jacksonville predictably was stifled in the passing game – Blain Gabbert had only 121 yards through the air (and two interceptions) which should have resulted in a strong running game with Maurice Jones-Drew leading the way – right? Wrong – MJD had only 10 rushing attempts for 45 yards in the game.

Translation – the Jags offense has zero identity and next to no fear factor ahead of Sunday’s game. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Defensively Jacksonville was equally disappointing letting Alex Smith carve them up all day long and generating just one sack and zero turnovers along the way. Hey, at least they held Jamaal Charles to 77 yards rushing!

The Oakland Raiders almost pulled one off against Indianapolis in Week 1. Terrelle Pryor rushed for 112 yards and passed for 217 yards becoming the seventh quarterback to throw for at least 200 yards and run for at least 100 in a regular-season game. He did make some mistakes but is a weapon the Raiders have sorely lacked. Pryor instantly makes them competitive going forward.

Darren McFadden was solid, not spectacular in Week 1 but with the extra attention that Mr. Pryor is going to command, McFadden may find some room that he has been sorely lacking. Expect Run DMC to continue to be a factor and to enjoy the lack of attention paid to him.

Oakland’s defense was OK last year despite the team as a whole being awful. This unit made life miserable for Andrew Luck in Week 1 and now has the honor of going up against one of the weaker O-lines in the game and a backup QB. Pressure should be the name of the game for Oakland once again in Week 2 and keying on Maurice Jones-Drew should equate to success on Sunday.

Betting Prediction

A few trends to consider:

• Under is 7-2 in JAC last 9 games in Week 2.
• Under is 18-7-1 in JAC last 26 vs. AFC.
• Under is 7-1 in OAK last 8 games overall.
• OAK are 4-10 ATS in their last 14 games on grass.
• OAK are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games overall.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are in a different category it seems when it comes to “the bad” of the NFL. Truth be told – this team may not win a game all year! The Jaguars are 5-0 ATS vs. the Raiders since 1997 and they face an Oakland team that is a woeful 4-15-1 ATS in their past 20 games as favorite. But at least there are some pieces in place in Oakland – I will take them to beat up on the Jags Sunday.

Pick: Oakland Raiders -5 1/2
