Colts and 49ers Look to Rebound Off Week 2 Losses win Week 3

The Indianapolis Colts head west to take on the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday and they bring with them a new toy – Trent Richardson was acquired Wednesday from the Browns for a first round pick. Both teams were losers in Week 2 – the 49ers fell to the Seahawks in Seattle while the Colts lost to the upstart Miami Dolphins on home turf.

Andrew Luck who played his college ball at Stanford returns to where the magic began to play his former college coach Jim Harbaugh in what looks, on paper like it should be a close game. The oddsmakers see it differently however – the Niners currently sit as a 10 points favorite and that number may go down with the arrival of Richardson.

The Indianapolis Colts squeaked a win out in Week 1 against Oakland – they didn’t play all that well against one of the lower tier of teams in the NFL and they lost last week to a decent, not elite Miami team. The problem appears to be a defense that has been largely manhandled by a couple of below average offenses so far. The Colts are 23rd in total defense thus far and 29th against the run – and now they have the task of facing an elite offense that will be motivated to erase the memory of an ugly Week 2 performance.

The Colts bettered themselves offensively for sure with the acquisition of Trent Richardson – the onus won’t be solely on Andrew Luck anymore! So far Luck has been forced to shoulder the load – he is 43-66 for 499 yards and three TDs so far this season and he is also the team’s second leading rusher with 76 yards. But just like the Colts’ defense, their average looking offense will be facing an absolutely top notch unit this week – unenviable especially after the humbling SF took last week.

If there is any team in the NFL that is going to come out strong in Week 3 it is the 49ers who were beaten, bruised and outclassed last week. Not acceptable to a team that fancies themselves as legitimate Super Bowl contenders. San Francisco will look to take it all out on the Colts this week in front of their home town crowd.  [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Colin Kaepernick clearly wasn’t himself last week – the crowd noise affected him just like it affects everyone else. Consider it his one mulligan of the year. At home, expect him to return to the form that saw him absolutely carve up the Packers defense in Week 1. He passed for over 400 yards in that game. You simply can’t look at San Francisco’s performance last week – they are twice the team they showed in Seattle.

The Niners have the honor of facing a sketchy defense this week – one that has been unable to stop anybody so far. Frank Gore should finally be a factor as the 49ers settle back into that quality balanced team that everyone expects they are.

San Francisco’s defense could also use this game as a spring board for better things. They are middle-of-the-pack statistically and should relish the chance to prove themselves against one of the best young QBs in the game.

Betting Prediction

:

A few trends to consider
• Under is 20-8 in IND last 28 games overall.
• Over is 8-1 in SF last 9 games overall.
• SF are 19-6-1 ATS in their last 26 games on grass.
• SF are 16-6-1 ATS in their last 23 home games.

It will take Trent Richardson a game or two to learn his new offense – my thought is that he won’t be a deciding factor out of the backfield just yet. That said look for the Indy offense to look ordinary again against what should be a very motivated San Fran defense. The Niners were very resilient last year – they were able to bounce back with a double-digit wins after each loss. The Niners prove why they are considered and elite squad Sunday!

Pick: San Francisco 49ers -10
