Houston vs San Diego Betting?

Chargers Host Texans Monday Night

The Mike McCoy era begins in San Diego Monday night when the Chargers host defending two-time AFC South champion Houston Texans. San Diego has had more than its share of problems over the past couple of seasons and unfortunately for Bolts fans they didn’t exactly remedy what had ailed them during their down times.

It looks like another long season in San Diego and it all starts Monday night.

The Houston Texans will get their MVP back from injury Week 1. Brian Cushing, who had been the emotional and physical leader on a terrific defense was lost in Week 5 last year but is apparently healthy and ready to terrorize again. He and sackmaster Justin Watt (20.5 sacks last year) promise to give the Texans one of the most feared defensive units in the game.

And on Monday they have the honor of facing Philip Rivers who was sacked 49 times last year for 311 yards! You have to think the Texans are licking their chops.

While the Houston defense is as good as any on paper, the Texans offense should be better than they were last year don’t you think? They were a middle of the pack unit last year – incredulous when considering they boast names like Arian Foster and Andre Johnson. The O will just have to be OK Monday night – the Houston defense should dominate.

For the first time in a long while, there seems to be a serious lack of confidence coming out of Chargers camp. They hype appears to be gone and the realization may have set in – San Diego is an aging club with issues all over the offense.

The O-line was brutal last year but may have gotten a tad better with the drafting of DJ Fluker, Philip Rivers looks like a shell of his former self, Ryan Matthews continues to be one of the more disappointing, talent rich backs in the league and Antonio Gates is a year older and as brittle as any player on the roster.[soliloquy id=”82219″]

Is Manti Te’o the answer on defense? Could his energy be the difference on this team? Not likely – the fact is that he DOES NOT play offense.

San Diego’s defense should be just fine as it was last year but if the offense can’t do their part (and I don’t think they can) the Bolts are going to have a hard time keeping up with the top tier teams in the NFL.

Week 1 Betting Prediction

A few trends to consider:

• HOU are 20-5-2 ATS in their last 27 games on grass.
• Under is 6-2 in HOU last 8 games in Week 1.
• HOU are 15-6-2 ATS in their last 23 vs. AFC.
• Over is 8-3 in SD last 11 vs. AFC.
• Over is 14-6 in SD last 20 games in September.
• Under is 14-6 in SD last 20 home games.

Houston has never beaten San Diego, going 0-4 SU and ATS in this series but they Texans have made a habit of beating up on the lesser teams in the NFL – 9-0 SU and 7-2 ATS versus non playoff teams.

I, like many have little faith in the Chargers – the Texans are a tier or two, maybe three ahead of the Chargers. Houston gets it done in Week 1.

Pick: Houston Texans -3
