The Houston Texans could be a sleeper in the AFC but it is something that many people have said at the start of each of the previous two seasons.
There appears to be some credence to it this year, though, as the Texans could have one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL.

Steve Slaton is a home run threat at running back, Owen Daniels is one of the better tight ends in the NFL, Andre Johnson is a Pro Bowl wide receiver, Kevin Walter is a good reliable pair of hands, Andre Davis is a deep threat and David Anderson is a solid slot wideout.

On top of all of that, the Texans return the same five offensive line starters for the first time in franchise history.

All of that success is contingent on quarterback Matt Schaub remaining healthy but so far in his two seasons in Houston, he has played just 22 of a possible 32 games.

On defense, the team has also improved with the addition of first-round pick Brian Cushing and the growth of a number of young prospects. The Texans have three former first-round picks on the defensive line and those players need to start playing to their potential.

If they do, though, the Texans are very sound everywhere else.

What the Texans need is some confidence. This is a young team that has the potential to grow into a playoff team this year but that starts with a few early wins. The offense is going to score plenty of points and if the young defense takes a small step forward, this is going to be a very good team in 2009.

Gonna be a fun team to watch but I don’t think that it will translate to a playoff spot this year. With an explosive offense, an emerging Defense, and a cohesiveness that most teams salivate over, the Texans appear to be on the verge of something big. “On the verge” is the key phrase. Too bad they are not in the NFC West!!

The Texans are better than they were last year. Better on offense and better on defense but I don’t know they are quite there as far as playoffs go. Schaub must stay healthy or the Texans offense is sunk. The defense is improved and helps the Texans move ahead of the Titans in the division. Surprise 2nd in the division but still no playoffs.
