Houston Texans Odds to win Super Bowl XLVII from Bookmaker: +1,600

The Houston Texans were an extremely good team last year. Houston went 12-4 in the regular season, and they were beaten out of the playoffs at Gillette Stadium by the New England Patriots. The Texans defense was ranked in the top five all year. The problems that this team used to have in the secondary are now gone.

Jonathan Joseph is one of the best cover corners in the NFL. Up front, J.J. Watt is an absolute beast who is quickly becoming one of the league’s best defensive players.

Offensively, Houston has a great backfield with quarterback Matt Schaub and running back Arian Foster. The issue here is Foster’s minor calf strain seems to be a bigger deal than expected. It was recently announced that Foster will be out until training camp.

Fortunately for the Texans, Ben Tate stepped up and showed he is one of the best backups in the NFL last year.  Schaub probably doesn’t get as much respect as he really should. He has been consistent in his career, and he has proven to be a good decision maker under center.

Andre Johnson is one of the best receivers in the game and Owen Daniels is Schaub’s favorite target over the middle. Foster and Tate are both good at catching the ball out of the backfield. Basically, Schaub is never going to be seen as short on weapons to throw the ball to on this roster. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Even though last year’s team was very good, the Texans made some big moves in the offseason that should help them. Ed Reed was brought in to shore up the safety spot. Reed certainly isn’t the player he once was, but he’s a ball hawk who knows how to make big plays. Don’t overlook the signing of punter Shane Lechler either.

Lechler is probably the best punter in the NFL, and he is going to unleash some bombs in Reliant Stadium this season. Expect this team to win a lot more field position battles this season.

The Texans schedule isn’t all that bad this year. They have one very tough stretch from week 3 through week 5 when they play at Baltimore, home against Seattle, and then at San Francisco. The game on December 1st at home against the Patriots should be great television.

Houston’s division isn’t all that difficult, and they really should coast to an AFC South title.

Led by J.J. Watt and Brian Cushing, the defense could certainly lead this team to a Super Bowl win.
