The Titans and the Giants have something in common – they looked so good in Week 1 but looked awful in Week 2. One of these teams can salvage a winning record at the end of this week while the other will have some work to do in order to get back to the .500 level.

The Tennessee Titans Week 2 loss can be solely put on their anemic offense and their inability to take care of the ball. Seven turnovers doomed them at home against Pittsburgh. Now they will hit the road for the first time this season and hope that Chris Johnson can start a new streak of consecutive 100+ yard games.

After a string of 12 games with at least 100 yards, Johnson only gained 34 yards on 16 carries. But that was the least of the Titans worries. Vince Young seems to have taken a step backward and once again looked like the shaky, nervous pivot that saw him replaced in 2008 by Kerry Collins. Young went 7 of 10 for 66 yards, two interceptions and one fumble against the Steelers.

We’ll give him a mulligan –  after all – he was facing an elite defense with lots to prove in Week 2.

Tennessee’s defense has seen a renaissance and should give Eli Manning and the Giants fits on Sunday. As of now, they are ranked first in overall defense, allowing an average of 206.5 yards of offense to their opposition. To see how well this unit is playing, look no further than the game last week in which they only allowed 127 yards of total offense (21 passing!) and did not surrender a touchdown (the only Pittsburgh score came on a Kickoff return).

The Week 2 New York Giants looked like the 2009 version of the team that went 8-8 last year. The offensive line was brutal and subsequently, Eli Manning and the running game struggled mightily.

Protection issues resulted in a substandard 161 yard passing day for Eli and 120 rushing yards by the previously feared tandem of Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon “who need a helmet”  Jacobs.

The running game will need to be better this week in order to move the chains and to set up the play action passing that the Giants rely on.

New York’s defense gave up 160 yards rushing to the worst running game in the NFL. This was more a product of taking away the pass than anything else, but still, it speaks to the notion that the Giants are not playing a cohesive brand of ball.

Prediction:

The Tennessee Titans have the best defense in the NFL so far but they have yet to come up against an offense like the New York Giants. It is an important game for the G-Men and I think that they come out swinging in this game. The Pittsburgh Steelers showed last week that once you rattle Vince Young he is not the same quarterback.

Containing Chris Johnson is unlikely but shaking the confidence of Vince Young is not. The Giants will get it done and remain on top of the NFC East.

Pick: New York Giants -3
