NFC News, Notes and Betting Angles

The beginning of NFL training camp is a little over two weeks away and already sharp football bettors are deciding which offseason dramas and summer stories will play into NFL betting this upcoming season. Here are some of the top betting angles in the NFC…

Brett Favre to the Minnesota Vikings

The closer the season gets, the more likely it seems Brett Favre will join the Minnesota Vikings.

Replacing “Will he?” as the biggest question is “When will he?”. Favre underwent shoulder surgery this summer and, just recently, offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell traveled to Mississippi to watch Favre throw. According to reports, the 39-year-old quarterback looked good but isn’t sure he’d be at 100 percent by the time camp starts.

If Favre does join the team, bettors can expect some added points for Minnesota’s spread as well as totals whenever No. 4 makes his debut. Despite his age, Favre still commands the respect of defenses, and with rushing leader Adrian Peterson standing behind him the field will open up for the 10-time Pro Bowler. Sportsbooks will pad the line to deal with the public appeal, but whether or not Minnesota deserves the extra chalk is still to be seen.

Pressure on in Dallas

Coaching the Dallas Cowboys is accompanied by a given amount of pressure. But if you’re Wade Phillips, not only is your job on the line but so is the legacy of a new stadium. That may sound funny to some bettors – until you see the $1.15 billion price tag for the new Cowboys Stadium and the fire in owner Jerry Jones’ eyes.

Dallas starts the season on the road, but bettors should pay particular attention to the home opener against the New York Giants on September 20. Football fans can be assured Jones will address the troops before this inaugural game, making it very clear this is a must-win situation. The same can be said for Week 3’s tilt with the Carolina Panthers, which will be the Monday Night Football debut of the massive 80,000-plus seat stadium.

The front office made a collective effort to change the attitude in the locker room, shrugging off Terrell Owens, Adam Jones, and other malcontents. Phillips and offensive coordinator Jason Garrett have no excuses this year and are singing for their suppers. That could give the Cowboys extra value in the motivation department, or put unwanted pressure on the staff and players.

Finding value in Detroit

The Detroit Lions’ winless season was painful to watch, but if you knew when to bet against and bet on the NFL’s worst team you could actually stomach watching those games.

The Lions were tagged as double-digit ‘dogs in eight games last year and covered in seven of those contests. They were a dismal 1-7 ATS at home but posted a 6-2 ATS mark on the road thanks to the extra chalk being piled on by oddsmakers. The public had their hand in those inflated lines as well, fading Detroit in tough games in Carolina, Indianapolis, and Green Bay.

This season’s sked is much softer, with non-conference road games coming at New Orleans, Seattle, Cincinnati, Baltimore, and San Francisco. The Lions host non-conference foes Pittsburgh, Washington, St. Louis, Cleveland, and Arizona. Only three of those teams finished above .500 last season.

Detroit is still going to be bad, but better than last year. With the addition of rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford, and a full camp for Daunte Culpepper, the Lions’ offense should climb out of the NFL basement. Even the defense, which allowed 32 points per game last season, has improved.

If playing Detroit’s spreads is too risky, bettors should look to the totals. The Lions were the second-best over play in 2008 (10-5-1 over/under), and will put more points on the board this year.

I agree with your assessment of the Dallas situation. Jerry Jone’s pockets are a lot lighter and his ego is bruised and battered. This is a do or die season for the entire coaching staff and QB Tony Romo.

Maybe Jerry ought to consider bringing back Jimmie Johnson.
