NFL Lines – Chargers Look to Bounce Back Against Jacksonville

The San Diego Chargers didn’t show up in Week 1 and now they find themselves needing a win just to be .500. The Jacksonville Jaguars on the other hand looked efficient in their Week 1. The Chargers will be looking for a bounce back game at home this week and they hope that the Jags road woes continue.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will be hoping to exorcise the roads demons that have plagued them the last two seasons but unfortunately for them, a hungry, motivated San Diego Chargers team stands in their way. The Jags were solid, not spectacular on offense and defense in Week 1 and they hope that their all around play carries them to a win in San Diego.

When all is well with the Jacksonville offense, they are a conservative bunch. Case in point – Week 1’s game against Denver. David Gerrard didn’t take any chances, Maurice Jones-Drew got his 25 touches and the Jags won the game. They may have to open it up against San Diego however -the Chargers are going to score some points.

The Jacksonville defense appears improved since last year. Their secondary still looked shaky but Martin Kampmann has solidified a line that generated a pass rush and forced some mistakes.

The Chargers will be fired up on Sunday. I kind of feel sorry for Jacksonville! San Diego was sloppy and unmotivated against Kansas City – we’ll give them a pass in Week 1! Week 2 should see the return of the execution that has made the Chargers into the contender they are.

Philip Rivers looked ordinary –  he only hit on three of his twelve passes to Malcolm Floyd but managed to hit Antonio Gates and Legadu Nannee at his leisure. The combination of no Marcus McNeil, no Vincent Jackson and a driving rain storm appeared to affect the Chargers more than one would have hoped. Jacksonville’s secondary is weak so expect a bounce back for Rivers and the boys.

The hyped San Diego running game was stuck in neutral on Monday night. Ryan Matthews and Darren Sproles didn’t generate much at all and Matthews was responsible for a costly fumble. They will be better eventually but perhaps they are missing Marcus McNeil too.

Defensively, the Chargers were OK. Outside of a huge play by Jamaal Charles, they more than held their own. This is a unit that has huge expectations this season and by the way they shut down Kansas City, I think that they are well on their way.

San Diego’s Special Teams were horrific and you can bet that they saw some extra time on the practice field this week.

NFL Lines Prediction:

Jacksonville is 5-11 on the road in the last two seasons. Their trips out west last year saw them get blown out by a combined score of 61-3 – ugly. Although I think that the Jags are improved, they are still a tier or two below the Chargers. San Diego is a pissed off bunch and will take out their anger on the Jags in Week 2.

NFL Lines Pick: San Diego Chargers -8
