Dallas Cowboys vs Cincinnati Bengals Preview

It’s time. We’ll, it’s almost time. It’s not time for full NFL betting but the preseason has arrived and that will do just fine for all you football-starved bettors right now.

The preseason kicks off with the Hall of Fame Game between the Dallas Cowboys and Cincinnati Bengals this Sunday night. Let’s make a pick. Remember, preseason betting is a different beast. It’s not about who will field the better team in the regular season.

It’s about who will field the better lineup in the preseason game and, more specifically, which team has more motivation to give its elite players reps.

The Dallas Cowboys are rapidly rocketing up my Super Bowl XLV contenders chart; they may even be No. 1 now. We know they can stop the run and rush the passer extremely well. And we really know that the Cowboys can score. Their offense may actually take a leap forward this year.

Tony Romo already had an excellent cast of characters surrounding him in Miles Austin, Jason Witten, Roy Williams, Felix Jones and Marion Barber. 2010 looks even more promising now that blue-chipper Dez Bryant, perhaps the next Randy Moss, joins the receiving corps. Also, Barber is in excellent shape and the electrifying Jones should also get more touches this season. Sports Betting at Sportsbook.com

But the flipside of all that optimism is that we shouldn’t expect much from Dallas in the preseason opener. The Cowboys have very few camp battles to resolve. Even the No. 2 receiver war between Williams and Bryant is on hold now that Bryant has a high ankle sprain.

The Cowboys’ backups are nothing special. Tashard Choice can still do damage if he gets the rock but Jon Kitna is old under center.

The Bengals, meanwhile, have lots of preseason work to do. Carson Palmer has plenty of new toys to break in. He has to develop a rapport with Terrell Owens and rookie tight end Jermaine Gresham. He also has to figure out how to manage Owens’ ego along with Chad Ochocinco’s and spread the ball around.

Cincinnati also desperately needs to break in megabust offensive tackle Andre Smith, so you can bet he’ll get plenty of playing time.

Once the starters are out, J.T. O’Sullivan is a decent backup QB and Bernard Scott is a more than capable No.2 runner.

Because the Bengals will put a deeper lineup on the field at Canton this weekend and have far more questions to answer, I think they’ll take down the Cowboys.

This game is simply more important for them.

Pick: Bengals -3
