Point spread, ATS odds, and moneyline betting and preview article for the 2009 Week 12 Thursday Thanksgiving Day football NFL clash between the Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lions..

NFL WEEK 12 – PACKERS vs. LIONS

A few months from now they will assemble in bars near Lambeau Field, look out at a few feet of snow and talk about how their team was so close to a playoff spot entering the final several weeks of the season.

Time: Thursday 12:30 ET
Venue: Ford Field, Detroit
MoneyLine: Packers -650 (-110) / Lions +475 (-110)
Spread: Packers -11
Over/Under: 47.5

See, the Packers will go to 7-4 after beating the Lions on Thanksgiving Day, but there is just not enough gas in the tank to beat the good teams left on the schedule and get to the obligatory 10-6 mark that includes you in the playoff conversation.

GB does have a victory over the Cowboys, for whatever that’s worth, but its other victories have come against the flotsam and jetsam of the league, and frankly the Packers will need to beat someone good (Pittsburgh? Baltimore? Arizona?) down the stretch to get to the dance.

First things first, though. Green Bay will need to concentrate for maybe a half-hour to 45 minutes on Thursday, and that should be enough time to grind the Lions into submission in a tradition that has gone on now for decades.

Detroit might have some success exploiting Green Bay’s outrageously sieve-like offensive line, but with Matthew Stafford ailing, they can forget about moving the ball efficiently. Not much has changed since the Lions threw a goose egg on the scoreboard against Green Bay in Week 6.Sports Betting at Sportsbook.com

Moving the chains has been hard enough for the Lions (2-8), but it looks like they’ll have to go 60 minutes on Thursday without their two best offensive players, Stafford and wideout Calvin Johnson. Both were injured in the bizarre victory over the Browns last Sunday (do the Browns really hit hard enough to hurt anyone?) and are doubtful for Thursday.

The expected absence of Stafford and Johnson will make life considerably easier for a Packers defense that has been so-so all season, and now has injury issues of its own.

Linebacker Aaron Kampman, who has struggled all season as the team adjusted to a 3-4 defense, and cornerback Al Harris are both cooked for the season with ACL injuries.

So both the Lions and the Packers have been forced to make adjustments to injuries ion the fly, with only three full days of rest after playing last Sunday. No matter. Everyone healthy or everyone hurt, we pretty much know how this one will go.
