2008 Record: 6-10
ATS: 8-8

Not many people are talking about the Green Bay Packers as being a sleeper in the NFC but there is potential. The defense can’t be any worse and the offense should only be better, but sometimes the way things look on paper is not the way they play out.

Starting on defense, most teams that switch from the 4-3 to the 3-4 need a year of transition. The Packers appear to be better-suited for the transition than most teams, with a deep linebacking corps and a quality secondary, but there are still question marks.

How will Cullen Jenkins and Justin Harrell work out as ends in the 3-4? Particularly the former first-round pick Harrell, who hasn’t shown much in his NFL career. B.J. Raji, the Packers first-round pick this year, could be a good fit at nose tackle but he held out until the middle of August, which is typically a bad omen.

On offense, there are less qualms at the unit looks loaded. The receiving corps might be the deepest in the NFC with Greg Jennings, James Jones and Donald Driver, while the running game surely won’t struggle as much as last year.

But one lingering concern is the performance of quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who not only seemed to struggle in important contests but also struggled in numerous fourth quarters.

In the first halves last year, Rodgers completed 66.5% of his passes and three 16 touchdowns and just five interceptions. In the second halves, he completed just 60.5% of his passes while throwing 12 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Unlike his predecessor, Brett Favre, Rodgers seemed to wear down as the game wore on and that needs to change or the Packers won’t win more than eight games.
This team looks good on paper and could surprise, but there are still some lingering concerns before we can put them in the playoffs.

The Packers season rests on the shoulders of Aaron Rodgers. Right now he is a great pick for the Fantasy Leagues, but he has to become more of a leader and start winning games on his own.

Rodgers is showing up as a fantasy stud. With a little help from the defense I think this is the team to beat in the NFC North. We’ll have to see how the transition to the 3-4 works out in GB. Rodgers reminds me some of the guy he replaced and barring injury will lead his team to the division title. 1st in the NFC North.

With the Vikes making all the noise, there is a good chance tha GB will catch a few off guard this year, Ryan Grant HAS to be better and Mr. Rogers and friends will light up the league this year. Like most, I have questions about the defense, but I am confident that one year removed from the Brett Favre side-show, GB is ready to take the next step and win the North…..again!
