If you’re even a casual sports bettor, you know it’s never too early to talk NFL. Let’s have a look at the early Week 1 odds and make some (very) tentative picks.
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 8
New Orleans Saints @ Green Bay Packers
NFL betting favorite: Packers -5
Forget Aaron Rodgers and the Packers’ offense for a second. The Saints should worry more about the young, ferocious, improving Packer “D,” especially with Drew Brees returning from a knee injury. The 2010 champs may overwhelm the 2009 champs.
Pick: Packers -5
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11
Pittsburgh Steelers @ Baltimore Ravens
NFL betting favorite: Ravens -3
The Steelers may be amped to have a full season of Big Ben. Maybe he’ll work hard this offseason and start 2011 in midseason form?
Pick: Steelers +3
Detroit Lions @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers
NFL betting favorite: Buccaneers -3
Both these teams are hot sleepers this season but the Bucs are further ahead and Detroit’s offense is still a work in progress.
Pick: Buccaneers -3
Atlanta Falcons @ Chicago Bears
NFL betting favorite: Bears -1
Jay Cutler may open this season on a mission but there are few teams I like more than Atlanta for 2011.
Pick: Falcons +1
Buffalo Bills @ Kansas City Chiefs
NFL betting favorite: Chiefs -6.5
A 6.5-point line in Week 1 is pretty frightening. But I really do like the Chiefs’ chances of being an elite offensive team again this season. Maybe they’ll rout the lowly Bills?
Pick: Chiefs -6.5
Indianapolis Colts @ Houston Texans
NFL betting favorite: Colts -1
We all know how Houston likes to tease us and how they made a statement early in the season against Indy last year. I think Arian Foster will lead the way again.
Pick: Texans +1
Philadelphia Eagles @ St. Louis Rams
NFL betting favorite: Eagles -4.5
I think the Rams will improve this season but I doubt their defense is ready to handle Michael Vick, DeSean Jackson, LeSean McCoy and Jeremy Maclin on turf.
Pick: Eagles -4.5
Cincinnati Bengals @ Cleveland Browns
NFL betting favorite: Browns -3
We have to pick Cleveland here considering how uncertain Cincinnati’s quarterbacking situation is right now.
Pick: Browns -3
Tennessee Titans @ Jacksonville Jaguars
NFL betting favorite: Jaguars -2.5
I like Jake Locker to start in Week 1 for Tennessee – but not Blaine Gabbert for Jacksonville. David Garrard should retain the job for at least a little while and he should outgun the rookie Locker.
Pick: Jaguars -2.5
New York Giants @ Washington Redskins
NFL betting favorite: Giants -3
Who will take snaps for Washington? No idea. Meanwhile, the Giants “D” could improve immediately after their solid draft. This could be a blowout.
Pick: Giants -3
Carolina Panthers @ Arizona Cardinals
NFL betting favorite: Cardinals -3
Is there a chance that teams will have to adjust to Cam Newton and not vise-versa? Maybe his athleticism will catch Arizona off guard in Week 1.
Pick: Panthers +3
Seattle Seahawks @ San Francisco 49ers
NFL betting favorite: 49ers -6
Don’t think the Niners have forgotten about the humiliation Seattle gave them in Week 1 last year. Time for revenge.
Pick: 49ers -6
Minnesota Vikings @ San Diego Chargers
NFL betting favorite: Chargers -9.5
I don’t care if Christian Ponder is a rookie. A 9.5-point spread in Week 1 is just silly. The Vikings still have enough playmakers on both sides of the ball to stay within 10 points, for cryin’ out loud.
Pick: Vikings +9.5
Dallas Cowboys @ New York Jets
NFL betting favorite: Jets -4
I think karma will bite the brash, overconfident Jets back at home. The Cowboys are primed for a rebound under Jason Garrett. I like them to make a statement on the road.
Pick: Cowboys +4
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 12
New England Patriots @ Miami Dolphins
NFL betting favorite: Patriots -4
I know Miami would love some revenge after the Pats embarrassed them last year but I don’t think it’s in the cards. New England is too good.
Pick: Patriots -4
Oakland Raiders @ Denver Broncos
NFL betting favorite: Broncos -1.5
Could this be the week’s closest game? I’ll assume Kyle Orton gets the nod at quarterback for Denver and that home field will give the Broncos the slight edge they need in this AFC West battle.
Pick: Broncos -1.5
