Super Bowl Preview

We are less than a week away from the big game and the Super Bowl Odds are up. In Sunday’s Super bowl XLIV, Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints will take on MVP Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts. A high-scoring, high flying matchup is expected as two of the best field generals in the game will be taking turns leading their offenses up and down the field.

Both teams will run their fast, blitzing 4-3 defenses at the top two quarterbacks in the game with both defenses needing to give almost super-human efforts to make stops.

Why the Colts will win

The Colts feature the only 4-time MVP in NFL History; Peyton Manning. He has continued his dominance over the league and leads a Colts team that has not lost once this season when playing all of its starters. The Colts defense is designed as a perfect complement to its devastating offense. Playing a hybrid of a 4-3/Cover 2 defense, first year coach Jim Caldwell has created a defense that plays well with the lead. A furious pass rush out of the front four with Pro Bowl DE’s Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis allow for more coverage schemes out of the Linebacking core, led by MLB Gary Brackett, and more headaches for opposing quarterbacks.

Many speculate that this team would be a sub-.500 squad without Peyton Manning as they witnessed horrific performances from QB Curtis Painter in the last two games of the season. Manning plays the quarterback position in a way that is entirely unique to him; calling the plays and calling audibles at the line of scrimmage while dictating blocking schemes to his linemen as he reads the opponents’ set up. Manning also has “happy feet”, a trait that is usually a negative about quarterbacks, but for Peyton, his feet moving allows him to be looking one way and then in a split second change his body’s direction and fire a strike to the opposite side of the field. He can make every throw and makes his already solid core of receivers even better.

Why the Saints will win

Sometimes people throw words like destiny and fate around very loosely. When applied to the current state of the New Orleans Saints franchise and its history, these terms become seemingly appropriate. The Saints have been one of the NFL’s most tortured franchises and have a tortured fan base. For decades the Saints put up losing record after losing record (many with Peyton’s dad Archie) and Saints fans would show up wearing brown bags over their faces to games. Now less than five years after a natural disaster decimated the city’s infrastructure and population but not its resolve, the New Orleans Saints stand at the brink of a Super Bowl Championship. It may in fact be fate or destiny that decides this one for the Saints. QB Drew Brees leads “Who Dat Nation” and an explosive offense with a hard hitting defense that crushed surefire Hall of Famer Brett Favre last week eventually causing the turnover that won them the game.

Who will win?

I can’t see even destiny affecting Peyton Manning at this point. The Saints will give what they always give; great effort and heart. It will not be enough this time. The Saints defense does not match up very well with the Colts and I like Peyton Manning to finally end the resilient Saints season. You have to remember that Peyton Manning is invincible until proven otherwise.

I have the line up to -6 and at that level I’ll take the Saints and the points. I see a close game that goes down to possibly the final possession much like last years game
