St. Louis vs Houston NFL Football Spread/Handicapping

The Houston Texans are a becoming a big disappointment in 2013, after having won the AFC South the last two seasons, and will look to get back to their winning ways when they host the St. Louis Rams on Sunday in an AFC vs. NFC Week 6 NFL battle.

The Rams meanwhile, are hoping to build on their big win over the Jaguars last weekend.

The Rams moved to 2-3 on the season after beating Jacksonville in their last outing, 34-20 at Edward Jones Dome.

St. Louis was outgained 363-351 yards, but outperformed the opposition where it matters the most — on the scoreboard.

Quarterback Sam Bradford played lights out, passing for three touchdowns and 222 yards while Zac Stacy rushed for 78 yards in the win.

The Rams defense did good job too, and held one of the league’s best running backs — Maurice Jones-Drew to 70 yards.

Now just a week later they will face another excellent running back in Arian Foster, who although has struggled of late, could uncork at any moment.

The Texans have had a miserable start to the 2013 campaign, with its offense averaging just over  18 points and 390 yards per game, which is indicative of the reason they haven’t been winning games.

The team enters Sunday’s contest fresh off a 34-3 shellacking by the 49ers at Candlestick Park. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Houston has failed time and again to close out drives and has been turning over the ball far too many times.

Leading that category is quarterback Matt Schaub who has eight touchdowns, but a whopping nine interceptions.

But Schaub doesn’t deserve all the blame, he’s been sacked 12 times.

Meanwhile, Foster rushed for 98 yards in Houston’s bout with San Francisco, and if that is any indication of how well he will play against a much weaker Rams defense, the Texans could use this weekend’s matchup as a springboard to a better second half of the season.

Nevertheless, defensively the Texans shine, and are allowing an NFL best 260 yards with two interceptions, 14 sacks and four fumble recoveries.

Matt’s Free Prediction

The Texans’ best bet in this one — shut down Sam Bradford — and force the Rams to beat them on the ground, a place where the Rams are yet to record a single touchdown this season.

And while I expect Houston to win, this looks to be a very generous number considering the state of things for the Texans.

Texans 24, Rams 21.
