New York won its last outing, 27-20 over the Bills behind a 300-yard passing effort from quarterback Geno Smith and two 100-yard receivers, plus a career-high 149 -yard-rushing performance from Bilal Powell.

Smith become the first rookie in franchise history to top 300 yards, while hitting wide receiver Santonio Holmes five times for a career-high 154 yards.  However, Smith was picked off twice versus the Bills.

Defensively, the Jets defense, which is permitting 16 points per game, was as good as it has been, recording eight sacks against Buffalo.

That could be a problem for a Titans offense that has not scored more than 17 points against New York in seven straight meetings.

However, this year’s Titans squad is much better than the previous few years, and is off to a surprising 2-1 record behind a 131-receiving-yard effort from Nate Washington who helped his team to a 20-17 victory over the Chargers last week.

Much like the Jets, the Titans entered the 2013 season with questions about quarterback Jake Locker who had battled injuries and inconsistencies in his first two seasons

But Locker has benefited from a strong running game, led by Chris Johnson, who leads the AFC with 256 yards rushing.

Johnson has had good luck against the Jet s, busting out a 94-yard scoring run last season.

Nevertheless, he will be tested by a defense that is giving up just 79 yards on the ground.

Meanwhile, the Titans defense is showing a big turnaround from 2012, yielding just over 18 points per game after surrendering a league-worst 471 points last season.

Matt’s Free Prediction

New York has dominated this series, going 6-1 ATS in their past seven meetings with the Titans, and this matchup is a tough one to call.

However, I think Tennessee is the better team with the better ground game and while Powell should eat up some nice yardage in this one, I think Chris Johnson will fare far better here.

Titans 28, Jets 21.
