In the meantime, the Saints began their 2013 NFL season better than they did one year ago, and will look to use its new defensive scheme to pester Tampa Bay quarterback Josh Freeman, who had a rough opening week.

Freeman completed just 15-of-31 passes against the Jets, who picked him off once and forced him to fumble the football out of the back of end zone for a safety earlier in the game.

But the loss can’t be just blamed solely on Freeman, as the Bucs’ imploded as a team, giving up five first downs to New York as a result of silly penalties, including a personal foul call on linebacker Lavonte David that set up the winning field goal with two seconds left to play.

That kind of foolishness could prove disastrous against a Saints offense that can make defenses pay without any help. Not to mention that the very same New Orleans defense shut down a very good Atlanta Falcons offense in Week 1, notching a 23-17 win.

Rookie safety Kenny Vaccaro had a strong debut giving the Saints secondary a fresh look along with new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

However, the Saints will be tested this week as the deal with wide receiver Vincent Jackson, who is the best playmaker on Bucs’ offense.

Meanwhile, QB Drew Brees passed for 357 yards and a pair of touchdowns against the Jets.

Brees has also faired pretty good against the Buccaneers, rolling up 307 yards and four touchdowns against Tampa last December.

Matt’s Free Prediction

New Orleans looked strong in Week 1 against an Atlanta offense who they held in check for most of the game. Stymieing their vaunted running game.

Looking ahead, I expect Ryan’s striking blitz packages to confuse the Bucs offense, forcing Freeman who already has a bad history against the Saints, into making some key mistakes.

Freeman tossed four interceptions in a 41-0 loss to New Orleans the last time out, and that was against a terrible Saints defense.

This has all the makings for a Saints win.

Saints 35, Buccaneers 20
