Yes, the Raiders are under .500, and yes, they lost in Week 6 to the winless San Francisco 49ers, but Oakland is still in second place in the AFC West and very much in contention to win the division.

As matter a fact, so are the Broncos, who are 2-4 in the AFC West and is the only AFC team yet to play against its own division.

Now the two will square off as Denver leads the series with 11 wins in their last 18 meetings, while the Raiders edged out a 20-19 win the last time the two teams met in Dec 2009.

It was a bit of an upset, as the 49ers had yet to win a game, but shutdown Oakland holding them to just three field goals in a 17-9 loss on Sunday. The passing game continues to face adversity as QB Jason Campbell did little to lead his offense with 8 completions on 21 attempts for a dismal 83 yards.

While passing has been nearly extinct, with the team ranking 23rd overall with just over 182 yards a game, the rushing attack has been solid and ranks in the top 10 behind 130 yards per contest.

Hold on Raiders fans, don’t start proclaiming victory just yet, a bleak situation could get worse as Campbell, who was starting in place of an injured Bruce Gradkowski, suffered a sprained left knee in the loss, leading to the possibility that third-stringer Kyle Boller could start in Denver this weekend.

The Broncos will hope to take advantage of Oakland’s quarterback situation in an attempt to avoid its third consecutive loss after QB Kyle Orton was finally neutralized, passing for 209 yards, and only a single touchdown, in a 24-20 loss against the Jets last week. The Broncos actually had the lead 17-10 heading into the half, but gave up a late touchdown with 1:13 remaining.

Orton has been the driving offensive force with just under 2,000 yards already this season, as the Broncos ranks 3rd overall in passing yards with 311 a game. The running game however is non-existent and ranks 32nd, leaving Denver to be a one trick pony.

That should work out well for a Raiders’ who has been very good at shutting down the oppositions passing attack, yielding less than 197 yards per game and ranks 8th overall.

Conversely, it’s Oakland’s inability to stop the run that’s killing their efforts, as they are allowing a nearly 140 yards per game to rank 30th overall. It may be an opportunity for Denver’s Knowshon Moreno, who has just 51 attempts for 159 yards with two touchdowns, to have a breakout game.

While Oakland’s secondary should be good enough to keep Orton from going wild, and their 10th ranked running attack being good enough to keep them in the fight. I’m going to say that the difference will be Moreno’s ability to grind the Raiders’ run stoppers, as the Broncos grab it first divisional win of the season.
