The Bengals haven’t got much left to play for, but that won’t stop them from trying to play spoiler to the visiting Chargers’ postseason hopes when the two meet in the jungle on the day after Christmas.

It would be an understatement to say that the season has been a huge disappointment for Cincinnati as they went from first to worst in the AFC North in just a single season and have one of the worst records in the entire NFL.

Offensively, the Bengals have been dreadful and QB Carson Palmer leads the way with 18 interceptions. He has plenty of yards, 3,396, to go along with 21 touchdowns, but hasn’t really factored into any of Cincinnati’s contests.

Running back Cedric Benson has gained 1,006 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground but he too has continued to perform a little too late.

The always flashy and sometimes controversial Terrell Owens leads the Bengals in receiving, but will miss the remainder of the season leaving Chad Ochocinco as the main target, with Jordan Shipley and Jermaine Gresham in tow.

Defensively, the Bengals have been not been cubs, allowing just 25.9 points per game and 342.9 yards per game. With plenty of young talent, this could be the core strength of for the team heading into next season.
As for the Chargers, they have turned things around after starting the season 2-5, but have won six of its last seven, their lone loss coming by way have rival Oakland.

At this time last season, the San Diego had already clinched their fourth straight AFC West title, but they are going to need a lot of help to make it five in a row.

The loss to the Raiders could be the one that does them in, as the Chargers are one game behind Kansas City in the division and a wild-card berth is unlikely as they’re two games behind Baltimore and the New York Jets.

Still the Bolts will come to play behind gamer Phillip Rivers who has the second best passing offense in the NFL as has thrown for 4,141 yards and 29 touchdowns with just 11 INTs.

The San Diego rushing attack has been hit hard with setbacks but Mike Tolbert leads the charge with 737 yards and 11 touchdowns while rookie Ryan Mathews looking to have a bright future after earlier season setbacks.

The defense has been solid and ranks third against the pass as the Bolts pass rush led by Shaun Phillips with 11 sacks, really gets after the oppositions quarterback. If they can’t get them in the backfield, they are also good at picking them off, with 14 interceptions for the year.

I don’t see the Bengals winning this game outright, but they could make enough noise to cover the spread. The Chargers will move the ball in the air and on the ground while the Bengals’ Palmer will get his numbers and scores in garbage time.
