Any early season question marks about the 49ers have been answered the last two weeks after wins against the Eagles and the Chiefs while the Rams find themselves in a familiar position – without a reliable QB and staring up at the top dogs in the NFC West.

49ers

The San Francisco 49ers have dug themselves out of a little bit of a hole but consecutive wins, some questionable early season tactics are a thing of the past.

The 49ers have gotten back to what has made them successful in the past – strong defense and a stellar running game.

Not coincidentally, the uptick in San Francisco’s play has corresponded with their re-commitment to the run. Frank Gore has been a true difference maker the last couple of weeks – he had 107 tough yards last week and the team as a whole had 171 yards on the ground against KC. This week the running game gets a crack at a leaky St. Louis run stopping unit – the Rams are 29th in the NFL allowing 152.5 yards per game.

San Francisco’s passing game doesn’t match up well against the Rams – St. Louis owns the second best pass defense in the league and Colin Kaepernick is 23rd in the NFL in passing. The running game will win or lose Monday’s game and you have to like the prospects of Frank Gore, Carlos Hyde and Colin Kaepernick running all over the Rams.

The Niners defense has been good this year considering all of the departed, injured and suspended stars. St. Louis’s offense has been OK but you have to give the advantage to San Francisco’s seventh ranked pass defense in this one.

Rams

The St. Louis Rams offense had a good game last week in a 34-28 loss to the Eagles. Third string QB Austin Davis has the Rams owning the fifth best passing offense in the NFL – 283.5 yards per game. Shocking I know. St. Louis showed a lot of character last week as well in coming back from 34-7 to make it respectable against a good team – the Rams actually had a chance to win that game. Simply put the Rams are no pushover on offense – although last week’s effort was against a pretty bad Philadelphia defense.

The Rams running game is a mystery – not sure they will have much success against a San Francisco team that largely held Jamaal Charles in check.

As for the St. Louis defense – they didn’t look great in giving up 34 against the Eagles and they have been OK so far in 2014. This is a decent St. Louis defense going up against a potentially potent offense that hasn’t quite woken up just yet.

Week 6 Betting Trends

• Under is 7-1 in SF last 8 games overall.
• SF are 12-2 ATS in their last 14 games in October.
• SF are 22-6 ATS in their last 28 Mon. games.
• Under is 7-2 in STL last 9 games overall.
• Under is 7-2 in STL last 9 vs. NFC.
• Over is 6-2-1 in STL last 9 Mon. games.

The San Francisco 49ers are a better team than their 3-2 record suggests. Despite all the happenings in San Francisco they are still an elite team that should take care of the games they are supposed to win – Monday’s matchup is one of them. The Niners are just too much on both sides of the ball.
