New Orleans
The New Orleans Saints have run off four straight wins, and they are starting to look like the team that won last year’s Super Bowl again. The team has dealt with a lot of injury problems this year, but they are starting to get healthy at the right time.
Drew Brees isn’t having the same type of success he had last season, but he’s still one of the top quarterbacks in the league. Brees has thrown one interception in seven straight games, and that is something he must cut down on. Last year he had a quarterback rating of 109.6. This year he currently has a quarterback rating of 92.7. A large part of the problem has been that the Saints running game has struggled this year, primarily due to injuries. This has forced the Saints to throw it early and often, so they have lacked balance on offense. Reggie Bush is now back in the lineup and Pierre Thomas is close to returning, which will help boost this running game. I expect this offense to continue to get better as the season goes along.
The New Orleans defense has been impressive this year. The Saints weren’t as good statistically last year as they have been this year. The only area where last year’s defense was better was takeaways. The secondary is playing great and the Saints are allowing less than 200 yards per game through the air. This is a very solid defense.
Cincinnati
The Bengals started the season 2-1, but they haven’t won since week three. This team had high hopes before the season, but things have gone about as bad as anyone could expect. There is still talent here, but it seems there are deeper issues surrounding this team.
The Cincinnati offense is led by quarterback Carson Palmer. Palmer has not had a very good season. He has thrown 15 interceptions, and several of those have led directly to a touchdown for the opposition. Palmer’s quarterback rating of 78.5 is one of the lowest in the league and it is his lowest for a full year since his rookie season. The running game was great last year, but they have been stuffed this season. Cedric Benson is only averaging 3.6 yards per carry, and he has only four rushing touchdowns this year. Terrell Owens has been the bright spot for this offense. Owens has 65 receptions for 914 yards so far this year. Can the Bengals offense turn it around on Sunday?
The Bengals defense was ranked in the top five in the NFL all of last season, but they have struggled this year. They are 23rd in the NFL in rushing defense, and they are allowing 26.2 points per game. The single biggest problem this unit has is that they almost never pressure the quarterback. The Bengals have just 12 sacks all season, which is easily worst in the NFL.
