It looked as if the Cincinnati Bengals might pick up an impressive come from behind win over the New Orleans Saints last weekend, but once again they faltered in the last minute and lost the game 34-30. The Bengals have been close a lot this year, but this team has failed to make the plays necessary to win games. The Bengals have now lost nine straight games.
Carson Palmer had one of his best games of the year last week, and the offense as a whole was pretty good. Terrell Owens and Chad Ocho Cinco both had a good game, and Jermaine Gresham had some big plays as well. Cedric Benson continues to struggle this year, and he is now averaging just a little less than 3.5 yards per carry on the season. The offense has had to settle for too many field goals all year long, which is an even bigger problem now that they don’t have a reliable kicker. The talent is there for this offense to be good, but they have been extremely inconsistent all year.
The Bengals defense really lost the game for the team last week. Cincinnati’s defense was very good last year, but this year they are struggling mightily. They are 28th in the NFL in points allowed. The Bengals are allowing 27 points per game. Where has the defense failed this year? It is the defensive front, which struggles to stop the run, and almost never pressures the quarterback.
Pittsburgh
The Steelers were outplayed for most of the game last week in Baltimore, but they made plays when it counted in the fourth quarter. This is a team that I believe has as good of a chance as anyone of being the Super Bowl participant from the AFC.
The Pittsburgh offense has struggled a little bit in the last couple weeks, but they are definitely a solid unit. Ben Roethlisberger should be ready for Sunday and he gives this team a leader who makes the big throw when he needs to. Heath Miller isn’t expected to play in this one, which means Mike Wallace and Hines Ward will be counted on to step up in the passing game. Rashard Mendenhall has over 1,000 yards, and the Steelers running game is much improved this year.
The Steelers defense is one of the best in the NFL, and a healthy Troy Polamalu is a big reason why. Polamalu made the huge defensive play last weekend in Baltimore that led to the game winning score. He may be the biggest game-changer in the NFL at the safety position. The Steelers front seven is as good as you’ll find too, and they are first in the NFL when it comes to stopping the run. The defense is allowing just 15.9 points per game this year.
The Pick:
The Bengals have typically played the Steelers tough on the road, but this isn’t the same Bengals team we saw the last four or five years. I expect Pittsburgh to dominate the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and cover the spread here.
