Cincinnati
The Cincinnati Bengals had a bye week last weekend, and they better hope they used these last couple weeks to improve a great deal. The Bengals just had games against the Browns and Buccaneers, which should be the easiest two games on their schedule, but they lost both games. Now they enter a tough stretch of the schedule.
Carson Palmer just hasn’t done his job so far this year for Cincinnati. Palmer is continually making bad decisions with the football and costing his team the win. He has thrown six interceptions this year, and two of those came in their last game against Tampa Bay in crunch time. The running game hasn’t gotten going the way it did a year ago. Cedric Benson is only averaging 3.9 yards per carry, and his longest run of the year is 22 yards. Jermaine Gresham has been a bright spot for the offense in his rookie season.
The Bengals defense has been mediocre so far this season. The huge problem they are having is that they simply can’t get any pressure on the quarterback. They have been forced to bring safety blitzes to get any heat on the opposing signal caller, which leaves them in a dangerous position.
The team has a great pair of corners and a solid young corps of linebackers, but the front four need to improve.
Atlanta
The Atlanta Falcons have a solid season going, and they know this is a tricky game for them against a talented Bengals team. They were beaten up pretty badly last weekend in Philadelphia, so they must bounce back this weekend.
Matt Ryan is the leader of this offense, and he is doing a nice job at the quarterback spot. Ryan had a bit of a sophomore slump last year, but his numbers are on the upswing again this year. Roddy White has become one of the best wide receivers in the NFL, which gives Ryan a great target on the outside. Tony Gonzalez is still a reliable and big target in the middle of the field. Michael Turner and Jason Snelling provide the team with one of the better tailback tandems in the league. This is a balanced offense that is definitely tough to defend.
The Falcons defense is an interesting unit, because they have given up quite a few yards, but they have done a great job keeping teams out of the end zone. To this point in the season this defense has been the epitome of a “bend but don’t break defense.” The Falcons do a good job forcing turnovers, and they’ll probably get some chances again this weekend against a Bengals team that turns it over quite often.
The Pick:
The Bengals should be a better team than they have shown so far this year, but the Falcons are a tough opponent. Atlanta’s defense will probably force some turnovers, but I also see the Bengals putting up some points in this one. I think the best play on the board is the over.
