Free Pick: Oakland vs. New England NFL Point Spreads & Preview

Week 3: Raiders vs Pats Picks

NFL Week 3 Betting action sees the Oakland Raiders taking on the New England Patriots on Sunday September 21st at Gillette Stadium. Cappers Picks provides free NFL handicapping tips all season long.

Sadly (for a team with such cool unis and cool fans) the Oakland Raiders have long been the grease-fire of NFL offenses. It doesn’t look like that’ll change much with rookie QB Derek Carr at the helm.

Oakland’s attack is mainly comprised of a hodgepodge of rookies, veteran cast-offs trying to prove themselves, and career enigmas (yes, Darren McFadden, that’s what I called you).

They travel to the Boston area to try and deal with those pesky Patriots. Though everyone outside of New England must surely be tired of Brady, Belichick and Co., they still look like a prime contender in the slumping AFC.

There’s been talk about Tom Brady’s elderly decline, but so long as he keeps winning ball games, it’s a moot point for anyone who doesn’t have him on their fantasy team.

Brady has steady targets in WR Julian Edelman and TE Rob Gronkowski. The multi-purpose threat of RB Shane Vereen – when they fit him into the gameplan – is also substantial.

Critics didn’t have faith in RB Stevan Ridley near the end of the preseason, but he was a major factor last week, eclipsing 100 yards and scoring a TD against Minnesota.

Oakland’s best chance to score against the Pats is to get some yield from RBs McFadden and bounce-back candidate Maurice Jones-Drew. “MJD” looked good in the pre-season, but has been battling an injury lately and his status for this weekend is questionable.

The likes of elite CB Darrelle Revis should add to Carr’s rookie misery in Massachusetts on Sunday.

Stud corner Revis aside, New England’s franchise has an uncanny ability to find someone (someone that isn’t sexy, but functional) to score points and prevent them.

Often in the past, Brady has effortlessly thrown up impressive stats, but the passing game has been unimpressive so far in 2014. The Pats used four INTs to crush the Vikings last week, but Brady needs to up his game before New England is truly firing on all cylinders.

NFL Week 3 Gambling Trends

  • Over is 7-3-1 in OAK last 11 games overall.
  • NE are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 home games.
  • Over is 8-3 in NE last 11 games in Week 3.
  • Over is 37-14 in NE last 51 games on fieldturf.

Regardless, the Pats should have the horses to handle the Raiders. The 0-2 Raiders have been a sad-sack franchise for years now. Oakland has been gouged on the ground thus far this season (ranking last in rushing yards allowed) so Ridley and Vereen must be licking their chops.

Count on the Patriots to beat the Raiders at home on Sunday. If Brady can elevate his performance to where it has been in the past, the outcome shouldn’t even be close.
