We are approaching the midway point of the season and it’s not quite do or die time for either of these teams, but both are in big time need of a win if they want to have any hope of making an appearance in the post season.

The Bears sit at .500 and a game back of both the Packers and Lions, while the Dolphins at 2-3 are quickly losing ground in the the AFC East as the Patriots have picked up their game and rattled off back to back wins.

Dolphins

It’s a little early to call this a must win, but with division leaders New England taking on the reeling New York Jets tonight, it looks as if the Pats will move to 5-2 and the Dolphins can ill afford to fall further behind in a division that looked to be up for grabs early on.

Miami has had an up and down season and have yet to record back to back wins. They opened their season with a win over the Pats before dropping two straight to the Bills and Chiefs. They beat up on the lowly, winless Raiders in week four but were unable to back that up as they watched a lead slip away on the last play of the game last week to the Packers.

To quote Dennis Green, the Dolphins “are who we thought they were”, they’re not terrible, but they’re not great, they’re just kind of…there.

They sit in the middle of the pack in the two big offensive categories (PPG – 14th, YPG – 16th) and they’re running the ball effectively, averaging around 136 yards per game on the ground, good enough for sixth in the league, but are only managing 217 yards per game through the air (25th in the NFL).

What’s this add up to? A team that can do a few things well with the ball but for the most part aren’t going to wow you. QB Ryan Tannehill has been less than what the Dolphins would’ve hoped, throwing eight TDs to go along with five picks so far this season.

Bears

This team is difficult to get a handle on right now. They’ve dropped games to the Bills and Packers at home, the latter was an absolute mauling. They’ve also gone into San Francisco and beaten the Niners, and just a week ago went into the Georgia Dome and held a potent Falcons offense to just 13 points.

Right now this team seems to be locked in on the road with a 3-1 record, but at Soldier Field they remain winless at 0-2.

With two tough road games coming down the line against the Pats and Packers, this game is huge for the Bears who, if they lose on Sunday could very well be staring at a 3-6 record by mid-November.

That will have to be in the back of the players’ minds this week, and although coaches and players will always say “we’re just focused on this game” the Bears know what their schedule is and this is a game they had to have circled as one they need to win.

For all of the weapons the Bears boast on offense (Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery, Martellus Bennett and Matt Forte) the passing game really hasn’t been earth shattering, managing just 267 yards per game right now.

Running back Matt Forte and the offensive line can probably shoulder some of the blame for that as the star back is averaging just 66 yards per game on the ground with only two TDs. Without much of a run attack to speak of teams are keying on QB Jay Cutler and forcing him to beat them.

Week 7 Dolphins vs. Bears 4* Free Pick

The Bears are the better team in this one and I think that daunting schedule the next two weeks is going to be enough motivation for them to get the job done this week against the Dolphins.

Chicago did a nice job shutting down a very good offense last week and they should be able to ride that high this week and keep the Dolphins’ pretty vanilla attack in check.
