New York Jets vs. San Diego Chargers – AFC Divisional Playoff Preview

The New York Jets slipped into the playoffs thanks to the generosity of their final 2 regular season opponents who rested regulars in favor of backups who proved why they are backups. The San Diego Chargers entered the playoffs as the hottest team in the NFL.

New York Jets

Impressed by the Jets? I guess I am a little too. Lets face it folks, the Jets have been impressive against mostly unimpressive teams of late. The San Diego Chargers are a totally different type of opponent. On Offense, The Jets will likely be forced out of the game plan that has made them successful all season. The Jets will likely have to abandon their #1 running game and create a little more Offense through the air. Doesn’t seem like a recipe for New York success does it?

The game is likely to come down to whether or not Mark Sanchez can find Braylon Edwards, Jerricho Cotchery and Dustin Keller rather than if Shonne Greene and Thomas Jones can run against the Chargers Defense. I don’t really like their chances and think that the Sanchez storybook rookie season comes to an end Sunday.
The Jets # 1 Defense is going to have it’s toughest test of the year on Sunday. Darrelle Revis will do his job – guaranteed, but will the rest of the unit be able to contain all of the Charger weapons? Probably not.

San Diego Chargers

The San Diego Chargers are truly on some kind of role – winners of 11 straight games. The Offense is just on fire right now, except of course for LaDainian Tomlinson. Philip Rivers is scorching hot and making the likes of Vincent Jackson, Antonio Gates and even Malcolm Floyd look All-World. Jackson will likely be shut down by Darrelle Revis, but Rivers should be able to find the rest of his weapons with great frequency. San Diego is playing too well right now to be controlled for a whole game. San Diego will attack, attack, attack.

On Defense, like the Colts, they have only to focus on stopping the run.
