2008 Record: 8-8
ATS: 4-11-1

From the firing of Mike Shanahan to the trading of Pro Bowl quarterback Jay Cutler, the Denver Broncos have had a tumultuous offseason. In an era where new head coaches already experience shortened honeymoon periods with their new teams, it’s safe to say that Josh McDaniels better produce results very early in his career as a head coach.

The Broncos still have a lot of good parts on offense aside from a quarterback and we’ll see how much of an offensive guru McDaniels really is. Kyle Orton and Chris Simms will compete for the starting job but if neither is anymore competent than they’ve proven to be, the Broncos top-notch offensive line, solid running game and talented receiving weapons will go to waste.

One major concern has to be the running game.

While most of the parts carry over from last year, there has to be some concern about how good the running game can be without Mike Shanahan. During his tenure, the Broncos were a 1000-yard back factory. They probably won’t have any issues this year but don’t be surprised if their ground game slowly deteriorates over a couple of seasons.

On defense, the Broncos are an absolute mess. Not only did they have a horrible unit last year, they are switching to the 3-4 scheme, which means there will be plenty of growing pains this year.

There is no competent nose tackle on the roster and as a whole, the defensive line is a huge weakness. Good luck running a 3-4 defense without a good line.

On top of that, a lot of high draft picks will be assigned to new roles. Jarvis Moss is now an outside linebacker, as is Tim Crowder and Elvis Dumervil while D.J. Williams is now an inside linebacker in a different scheme.

Brian Dawkins was added to the secondary but picking up defensive parts from the Philadelphia Eagles is like picking up pitchers from the Atlanta Braves – buyer beware. See: Hugh Douglas, Bobby Taylor, Troy Vincent, Michael Lewis, Jeremiah Trotter.

On the whole, the Broncos have turned over quite a bit of their roster, so wins won’t be expected early. The real test will be to see if the team still has faith in McDaniels when the losses come. If some development is shown, the Broncos will be able to get past the Cutler trade.

But if the Broncos have a real ugly season, McDaniels – and owner Pat Bowlen – will feel the heat.

The Broncos problems run a lot deeper than just losing their quarterback. Josh McDaniels is going to have a monumental task keeping this team competitive this season.

If they get off to a bad start, this is a potential 4-5 win season for Denver

It has been a swap meet of an off-season for the Broncos bringing in new head coach Josh McDaniels and trading away franchise QB Jay Cutler. QB Kyle Orton will be the starter this season but will be a diluted replacement for Cutler. Denver will have a solid running game with free agent signings Correll Buckhalter, J.J. Arrington, Lamont and first round draft pick Knowshon Moreno. The big plays Denver was able to pull off with Cutler will be gone. The Broncs defense will have rely heavily on LB’s Boss Bailey and Elvis Dumervil to shut down their opponents running game. Denver will once again finish this year at .500 with an 8-8 record

You think Brian Dawkins wants a mulligan? Me too! Top to Bottom, the Broncos are a mess. A losing season is a certainty. The only streak I will be watching is the consecutive sell-out streak at Mile High (It’s in jeopardy too!!!). Gonna be ugly folks.

McDaniels is trying the break it then rebuild it method which is a good move if you are named Bill Parcells. McDaniels is not. The Broncos will continue the dismal slide from last year and be relieved to see their lowly kin in the AFC West on the schedule. If they win five games I will say the season is a success. Last in the AFC West.
